Megan took this photo on Charlie’s birthday when Joplin was staying! They loved playing catch with the birthday cake together! Charlie spoiled Joplin when she visited with food especially noodles and lots of cuddles. Unsurprisingly, Joplin loved Charlie and would usually try to sit near him when she could. We both miss him and his excitement, cleverness and kindness and wish we were celebrating together on this beautiful day in the corner booth of the Gibson. ❤️

Charlie’s No Pro team won the championship this year as the underdogs. It was so exciting and bittersweet to watch them win for a Championship for Charlie! Charlie’s Saturday and Sundays teams are in the playoffs this weekend and Charlie is on our minds and with us in spirit. We have finalized the bench planning with the Parks Department and waiting for a date to find out when it will be installed and will share more details as they are available. We will be thinking and missing Charlie especially with his birthday upcoming on October 3. ❤️

Since 2020, the Crystal Lake softball team would vacation together every summer. This year, I took a moment to honor Charlie on our hike. He loved nature so much and where I felt his spirit the strongest. — with Sabrica Barnett

Whenever I hear the Shoreline East train whistle I think of Charlie. He used to come by train to visit us in CT. I would pick him up or at the station or sometimes he would walk to our home. The whistle has always had a mournful sound, but even more so now. I miss you Charlie, so much. We always looked forward to your weekend visits.

Dear Charlie, I will love you…

Dear Charlie, I will love you for the rest of my life

Charlie, how has it been 2 months? It feels sometimes like so much longer. I have lost you hundreds of times in the last 2 months. I wanted to tell you yesterday about a Joplin’s bad haircut because it reminded me of a time when you were late dropping her off because you gave yourself a haircut that also turned out a little patchy. We would have laughed and joked about if Joplin should get Mohawk to match her favorite person. I still see you for milliseconds at a time in a leather jacket on Bedford Ave or cutting across McCarren park. And then I grieve you for the hundredth time.

It’s 84 degrees right now; these are the days we waited for all winter, that feel like everything is okay and possible after a cold, dark winter. It’s moments like this and so many others I think with a bittersweetness “Damn, Charlie would have loved this.”

I met Charlie 5 years ago playing softball in Central Park on a mutual friend’s team. The game gave us an instant connection that spilled over to many more teams played together and a friendship I will forever cherish. Charlie was such a fun genuine kind soul and one of the brightest I knew. I’ll miss him dearly.

Charlie was one of our most reliable hitters, which earned him the lead off spot on our roster. During our first game, we reserved the lead off spot for Charlie. Gabe Henry stood in as a proxy, symbolically taking an at bat but never swinging at the ball. It was a cold and rainy day, but rain also symbolizes change, renewal and rebirth. This year won’t be the same without Charlie, but his loss has only tightened our bond as a team. Just as Charlie did each week, we will give it our all every game and play with a renewed sense of purpose. We love and miss you, Charlie! 💐💔🕊️

March 25th was opening day for the McCarren Park Saturday Softball League. We felt a huge hole in our hearts and on the field. Before the game, we held a moment of silence in center field and started the game with only 3 outfielders, reserving the 4th spot for Charlie.

A memorial to Charlie has been up since February. Flowers adorn the backstop, a flyer with a QR code to this website is posted on the fence and a water bowl for all the dogs in park is replenished daily.
