I was so sad to hear of Coach's passing. He was my track coach at Daniel Murphy, '73/'74.

Not only a great coach but he helped me thru some rough times personally while attending Murphy. Lots of laughs and good times while running with the team. He will forever be in my thoughts. RIP Coach

the most fun I had with Chuck was after classes on many days when we would go to Mr. Pockets pool hall and shoot games of 9 ball & snooker & play our favorite jazz tunes on their jukebox

My wife and I were struggling in our marriage. We were able to find help with Charles. I think he saw us for almost a year. We looked forward to our sessions where the first five minutes were always about sports.  Sometimes it was our kids others it was his. My wife and I always felt like he was impartial and fair. He could occasionally tell you something that you didn’t want to hear. But because it was coming from someone you trusted it was ok. He taught us how to treat each other. Miss him terribly.
Charlie Franklin was one of the most admired of class mates. He proudly wore a Letterman's sweater all four years and he was the epitome of school spirit. He was elected Student Body President senior year by the students.I was privileged to be in the “Glee” club with him. Class of 1964. Condolences to all the family!. RIP
First of all, my sincere condolences to Elise, Eric, Kaelia, Collin and McKenzey. So sad and sorry that i'm only responding now. ' Uncle Butch' was the closest person I had to an actual uncle. My mother, Diane, was an only child and my father had one sister who moved to northern California when I was very young. My friends would always reference their uncles and I was always envious. My mom's cousin, Butch, would become the greatest 'pinch-hitter' of all time. Although only seeing each other once a year, twice if lucky, I would always look forward to our conversations. Truly one of the kindest, smartest, down to earth people ever to live. The world is far worse off without you in it.............you will be missed.
Today would have been my cousin, Chuck's, birthday. I have thought about him all day and although we didn't get together as often and we would have liked, I feel his absence, especially today. He was like a brother to me and I adored him. His laugh was contagious and his spirit was warm and attentive. I was continuously amazed at the wonderful man he was and his journey in life since we were toddlers playing at his home on Hickory Street. Dear Cuz, there's a part of my heart missing but thankful to have you in my life for so many years.
What sad news to hear, condolences to all the family.

My deepest condolences to his family, I shocked to he has passed, a popular and so well liked as President of Saint John Vianney Class of 1964. May he RIP
Dr charles ‘Chuck’ was the most important discoveries I ever made around 8 years ago. He was instrumental in my well-being and an incredible man. I have a deep love for him and the news he has passed has taken my breath away today.
He will no doubt however be with us all spiritually. He was ‘kinglike’ and that’s something he taugh me. To try to be ‘kinglike’ at all times.
I will miss seeing you charles but know your around.
Big love commander
And big love to his family who he always referred to with masses of pride and love

I first met "Cousin Butch" in late 1962.He was still in high-school and Diane and I went to the Alhambra High senior prom together. He was her family then and became "our family" the rest of his life.
In 1968 he became "Godfather" to our oldest son Barry Christian .
I remember a particular phone call from "cuz" during the time he and Angela were living in Santa Monica. It went something like this.
Hello, "cuz",
I just had to call because I am so jazzed and wanted to ask if you have heard Thelonios Monk.
Always looking to be his "straight man", I responded.
I don't know Chuck. Is he a Franciscan or a Jesuit?

A few weeks later the phone rings again.
Cuz, are you listening to Hugh Masekela?
Not to seem ignorant from the last call, I ask.
Is he one of the leaders trying to do away with Apartheid in South Africa? I am ready to march!
My "jazz" was Satchmo, The Duke, Billie Holiday and Ella .
We learned from one another.
Wish I had all those "jazz 78 RPMs of days gone bye.

P.S
Nobody dies as long as someone remembers them.
Chuck was one of my first professors at Phillips Grad. Ins. in 1998. He walked in with so much stagger and power in his voice. Chuck then became one of the profound people in my life. As one of his interns he pushed me to take risks with clients and letting them see me for who I am not this fake superhero I thought I was suppose to be. I freaked out once and told him I saw a client at a singles event and he simply looked and said I don't understand aren't you single? and isn't he single? I said yes and so then he said great now he knows you're actually a person nothing wrong with that!! For Over 20 years Chuck was there to guide me and cheer me on as I fell- as a therapist, a wife and a mother and wasn't afraid to tell me stories of his own mistakes to help guide and teach me about the beauty of imperfection in all of us. Every other Monday Chuck and I had a consultation meeting where he always was able to say something so amazing I thought of it as magic. Our last meeting was Monday Feb. 1st and that last meeting Chuck told me about the amazing bond he saw in his children with one another and the kindness of his wife for putting up with an Ogre that he thought he was often becoming. I said that was hard for me to believe. He began to tear up telling me the gifts he has had in his mother, brother, sister, wife and all his children. I feel so blessed to have been mentored by a man who was never afraid to be soft and so tough. Chuck was truly a gift to so many of us and I thank you, his family, for sharing this amazing man with all of us.
The telephone rang at 3:06 P.M. on Saturday ,February 6,2021.I was in the garage and could not pick it up before it went to message from my son Barry. I dialed the number back and he began,"Mackenzey called."
When a family member's message begins as such, the rest of it becomes surreal! A few other comments exchanged and as I hung up I felt a sudden emptiness as the tears rolled off my cheeks and hit the garage floor. As I stepped inside the house my wife ,Kathy asked if I was O.K? The words seemed to hang in my throat as I answered, "Cousin Chuck passed away ,last night! She said ,"He was one of the "good guys" and I know you loved him."
I like Tony Bernez (class of 1973) had Chuck as our Psychology teacher. He was a great teacher but also very empathic and understanding. It was largely his influence that made me major in Psychology in college and eventually getting my Masters in Counseling. A few years after I started working at Loyola High School as a counselor (mid 1980's), I contacted Chuck and asked if he would be willing to give our faculty an inservice with a focus on student stress and anxiety. He was professional, engaging and insightful. I continued to refer students to him for his mental health expertise over the years. He will be missed!
Chuck will never be forgotten. When I hear a piano playing or an organ, or jazz or musical or watch an old movie, I will remember Chuck. Whenever I hear Christmas carols I will remember Chuck. And of coarse the Super Bowl Game; Chuck’s voice and laugh will always be there.
Chuck was without a doubt one of my most influential high school teachers at Daniel Murphy HS (Class of ‘73). I’ll never forget the day we viewed an actual film of a crainiotomy in his Psychology class which was
intriguing but it must have been all-too-graphic for me since I completely passed out while watching the film, toppling the desk I was sitting in along with my books and notes. I was out cold. But the next thing I knew, Chuck was kneeling over me, reviving me and helping me collect myself, showing genuine concern in the process. I took a lot of good-natured ribbing from my classmates for passing out in class, but Chuck did a lot to help me through that very embarrassing episode. More than that, what I learned from Chuck in his class influenced my decision to study and pursue a career in Psychology (albeit not neuroPsych!). I will always remember him as a gifted teacher with a great sense of humor and as a very caring counselor and mentor. Oh yes, he was also our track coach my senior year. I will surely miss him, and will never forget his care, concern and instruction during my formative years. Rest In Peace, Chuck.
I remember Chuck Franklin quite well. I was not in his class because I graduated from Vianney/Murphy High in 1966.
However, I was aware of his energy, dedication, and intelligence as a student. I had respect for him. God bless him and May he Rest In Peace.
Danny Cochario
I just don’t seem to be able to find the words to express my feelings for someone that I’ve known for close to70 yrs. Rest In Peace my friend with love Pat.
