Charles's obituary

Mr. Charles Feltman “Buck” Walker, age 97, beloved husband of the late Ruby Willis Walker of the Orianna Community of Treutlen County passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, June 22, 2024 at the Treutlen County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Soperton.

Born at home in Orianna on June 10, 1927, he was one of eight and the last living child born to the late James David “Jim” Walker and Bernice Williams Walker. He grew up in Orianna and attended the Orianna School. He was raised during the Great Depression and learned very early on what hard work was. At the age of eleven his father unexpectedly died which thrust each of the children into the role of working to provide and survive. He was plowing a mule before reaching his teenage years and recalled weeding pine seedlings for $ 1 dollar per day before heading to Savannah for work in the Savannah Ship Yards.

In 1947, he married Ruby Willis, whom had been a friend since childhood. The Walkers lived in Soperton for a number of years before moving to the Walker homeplace in Orianna in 1966. Work various jobs including at Waller’s Cotton Gin and J. P. Stevens Woolen Mill from where he retired in 1992. While at the Woolen Mill, he would work the night shift and farm during the day. He raised hogs, cattle, chickens and did whatever was needed to provide for his family. He later joined the staff at Sammons Funeral Home where he developed heart felt relationships with his new found extended families through the care and compassion he extended to each family that he served. He remained with Sammons Funeral Home until 2016 when his wife’s health began to decline. Sammons families still today ask “How is and where is Mr. Buck”?

Mr. Buck enjoyed gardening and sharing the bounty of his efforts and his and Miss Ruby’s annual involvement as Vendors at the Million Pines Arts and Crafts Festival.

He and Miss Ruby were longtime members at Orianna Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and served on many various committees.

Miss Ruby passed away in 2020.

In addition to his wife of seventy three years, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Georgie Mae, Owena Faye, James William “Bo”, Robert Albert “Bob” “Snowball”, Dannie Fern “J-bird”, Loita Ivaline “Dinah” and a sister that died at an early age.

Mr. Buck leaves behind, a daughter, Beverly Wyatt (Lawton), Orianna Community, a son, David Walker, Satsuma, FL, grandchildren, Tiffany Wyatt McLendon (Chuck), Jonathan Wyatt, great grandchildren, Ethan McLendon, Bethany Wyatt Ricks, great great grandchildren, Emilio Lopez, Laylinn Lopez, Oaklyn Beverly Ricks, Ruby Kate Ricks, numerous nieces and nephews as well as a feline pet, Tom-Jerry.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 on the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Pastor Arthur Conley and Reverend Mark Sweat officiating.

Mr. Buck will be laid to rest beside his wife in the Orianna Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be former and present employees of Sammons Funeral Home.

His family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 10:00 o’clock a.m. until the hour of service at Sammons Funeral Home or friends and family may call at the residence.
