I met Cate when she was visiting Portland for her residency interview at OHSU. She was outgoing but down-to-earth, beautiful, and funny (duh). We drove back from the pre-interview dinner to her Airbnb that night and blasted No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom on the way there. I’ve told this story a lot but I knew right away we would be good friends. She matched at OHSU and we later worked together in the medical ICU. It was a stressful time and we worked really long hours. Tony was the fellow during that rotation and they were relatively early in their relationship. I remember showing up to sign-out at 6 am one morning and feeling frumpy and terrible. Cate showed up looking fabulous as usual, having just gotten her eyelashes done. That’s one of the things I love about Cate—she was genuinely herself. Later on in residency, my mom suffered some major health issues and I moved back to Arizona for a year. Cate was great at staying in touch. When I moved back to Portland, Cate and Tony found a beautiful house in the hills with the most gorgeous garden and they invited me to room with them. We had way too much fun decorating the house. During one of the most difficult times in my life, Cate and Tony really got me through. Cate gave the best hugs. They even put up with Quinn, my extremely loud and barky dog. Cate took such great care of herself, emotionally and physically. She really inspired me to be a healthier person. I met my now husband during that time and remember coming home from a date and telling Cate and Tony about it. Nathan and I got married this past September. Cate was the most stunning bridesmaid. We laughed about fart jokes while getting ready. Cate had the BEST laugh.
I love you and I miss you. Your authenticity, generosity, sense of humor, your rebelliousness. You are irreplaceable to say the least.

I was fortunate enough to meet Cate through my sister Alina, as the two of them went through residency together. The friendship that Alina and Cate build was a beautiful thing to witness. I will forever cherish her openness, bright spirit and infectious laughter. This world has truly lost a bright light. My sincere heartfelt condolences go out to Cate's family and friends ❤
