Melissa,

I am so sorry for your loss. I loved reading the obituary about your Mom, what wonderful memories you must have of her. You were an amazing and devoted daughter to her.

Take good care,

John Fitzpatrick
What a beautiful woman. I met Carolynn in 1978 on the Krueger campaign. I was 14; she was very kind to me. I remember her as fun and engaged in life. Sending love and prayers to Carolynn’s family and beloved friends. Xoxoliz Stewart

Your mom was such a fixture in my childhood- like a second mom. The cool mom haha. She always let me come over. She always let me spend the night. She always had good music. A few of my favorite specific memories I have of her is one night when she went out and we got ourselves worked up about some noise and barricaded ourselves in your room. She got home and we were hiding behind your bed and she just laughed and laughed at us. And then told us to put everything back totally straight faced. She just let us be silly kids while at the same time making sure we didn’t get too out of line. I remember going to Port A, to your grandparent’s ranch, staying at y’all’s place for a whole week when my parents would go out of town- she always made me feel welcome. 💜

I don't recall the exact moment I met Carolynn but it was at Bob Krueger's campaign headquarters in Austin. We became instant friends, and over the years since, we became more like sisters. We laughed and we cried together, and shared all the secrets that sisters share. Melissa was not even a glint in Mom's eyes when we met, but when she came along, we began to share many laughs, as well as some trials during those teenaged years. I was so honored to be asked to be a godmother, and recall Carolynn telling me she had to ask for special permission because I was the only godparent who was not a Catholic. I'm sure she never went to confession about the bourbon we put in Melissa's baby bottle to calm her when she was teething - it didn't work, so we drank the bourbon and calmed ourselves. I remember the parties at our homes over the years - each one arriving early to the other's house and staying late to clean up - all the little things that make a friendship special and long-lasting.
My favorite story about your mom was fairly early in our relationship it was the night she called wanting to meet us for drinks at Baby A’s.

So we drive to Baby A’s at Howard and 35. We go in to find her and no Carolynn.

You call her on her cell phone and she answers just giggling up a storm. The side of the conversation I can hear is funny. It was like an SNL skit. We proceed to drive to 3 more Baby A’s all around Austin. This is the first time I heard you use foul language. End up finding her in a corner back at the first Baby A’s we stared at just laughing up a storm with a fairly large bar tab and a really good buzz.

She always did like to laugh and be silly.
