Carolyn's obituary

ALEXANDER----Carolyn Jean Gillis Alexander, age 84, died peacefully on December 23, 2016 at Community Hospice St. Vincent's Riverside, after a struggle with Alzheimer's. Jean was born August 16, 1932, in Vidalia, Georgia, the daughter of the late Henry Dalton Gillis and the late Ossie Thompson Gillis. She was the youngest of three children, sister of the late Annie Gillis Bendimire and Jack Edward Gillis.

In 1950, Jean married Garland Truman Alexander who preceded her in death in 2013. Together they moved to Jacksonville and reared three children. Jean was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who delighted in homemaking, decorating and collecting antiques.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Marsha Alexander Hall, son Mark Ladson Alexander and daughter-in-law Anne Mahaffy Alexander. She doted on her grandchildren, Ashton Alexander Brantley, Duncan Hall, Carolyn Alexander, Dalton Hall, Christina Alexander and great-granddaughter, Tatum Brantley. Sadly, Jean was predeceased by her son Archie Alan Alexander (Art) in 1972. Other surviving relatives are nephews Thomas Bendimire and John Gillis and niece, Sonja Gillis Gardner.

There will be a graveside service at 1:00PM on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 for family and friends at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Orange Park, 111 Blanding Boulevard in Orange Park. A reception will follow at the home of Mark and Anne Alexander.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Community Hospice of St. Vincent's Riverside. Memorial donations can be sent in her name to Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
