Carl's obituary
Carl T. Wibbenmeyer lived a life defined by intellect, conviction, and a deep, steady love for the people around him.
Carl was born in Amarillo, TX on December 8, 1959 to Edgar and Helen Bené Wibbenmeyer. He grew up as part of a large, close-knit family that included four sisters and two brothers. Carl graduated from Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, TX in 1978. From an early age, it was clear that he had a remarkable mind and a gift for thoughtful debate. He was often the smartest person in the room — and frequently the quickest. His sharp intellect was matched by an equally sharp wit, delivered with timing that could both disarm and delight. Yet what people remember most was not just his intelligence, but the passion and energy behind it.
Carl graduated with honors from Washington University in St. Louis in 1982, earning an AB degree with a dual major in Mathematics and Philosophy. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas School of Law in 1985 and was licensed by the State Bar of Texas that same year. He practiced law in Austin for 20 years, specializing in the representation of small and medium-sized corporations before joining TPRA in 2006. As Chief Operating Officer, he was responsible for managing the company’s operations and ensuring the consistent delivery of exceptional service — a role he carried out with precision, integrity, and care.
But titles only tell part of the story.
If you knew Carl, you knew his greatest joy was “his girls” — his beloved wife, Nina, and daughter, Tess, whom he loved fiercely and completely. He was never more himself than when cheering from the sidelines, planning the next adventure, or cooking dinner for the people he loved. He was the kind of host who believed food was an act of devotion — a meticulous chef, a generous pourer of good wine, and a curator of thoughtful conversation. He delighted in discovering and sharing great bottles, believing wine — like a good debate or a well-told story — was always better when shared.
Carl loved live music, spinning records, literature, finance, the outdoors — especially camping and travel — and a spirited exchange of ideas. He was a fierce but joyful debater, someone who relished the challenge of a well-argued point and the humor that often followed. A devoted fan of UT Women’s Volleyball (#believe) and the Longhorns community, he brought enthusiasm and intensity to everything he loved. Carl especially loved planning trips for the family to get together. He once organized a fabulous rafting trip through the Grand Canyon, which was full of so many exciting adventures.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Wibbenmeyer, his beloved daughter, Tess Wibbenmeyer, his mother, Helen Wibbenmeyer, his sisters Carol McCarty, Diane Turner, Donna Hall (Jeff), Lisa Minmier, and his brothers Kurt and Stan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families, all who will carry forward his legacy of intelligence, conviction, hospitality, quick wit, and unwavering love. He was preceded in death by his father, Ed Wibbenmeyer, and his brother-in-law, Mike McCarty.
Carl will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his quick humor, his fierce loyalty, his love of music and ideas, and the way he showed up fully — in work, in family, and at the head of the dinner table. Though he will be deeply missed, his presence will live on in every record played, every spirited debate, every adventure taken, and every bottle uncorked and shared in his honor.
