There are students who pass through your classroom, and then there are students who change you. Caleb was one of those rare souls.

He made me a better educator because he challenged me to see more, listen deeper, and teach with greater compassion. He made me a better person because his heart was so open and genuine. Caleb had a way of lifting a room simply by being in it. His smile was constant, his laughter contagious, and his kindness intentional.

He celebrated others. He showed up with love. He pushed all of us to grow — not through pressure, but through the example he set. He led with heart.

His presence brought light into our classroom, and his love left a lasting imprint on everyone who knew him. I will forever carry the lessons Caleb taught me, both inside and outside of the classroom.

I'm sorry for your family's loss. Caleb was such a bright light and amazing person. — with Connie Sperry (Wentworth)
Caleb always brought a smile to my face when I would visit with him in the halls of Glendale High School. He was a respectful, kind person. Your family in my prayers. - Claire Spence

To Dad: Woof! - Oskar; Dad joke aside, I wanted to provide an update to all who have asked about Oskar. Caleb's closest companion has made it home with family here in Kansas City. We've noticed him waiting at the front door for his best bud. That profound love and companionship he shared with Caleb is something that he will carry with him as he settles into his new home. He will be cared for and loved just as Caleb loved him. This picture was taken yesterday. — with Oskar
Here is a video of Caleb's infectious laugh, wheezing and all. It was impossible not to join in and laugh with him.
Here is a 2019 video gem of Caleb being funny. When walking around a consignment shop, he found a tiny finger puppet hand and a miniature shopping cart. Naturally, he decided to do "his shopping" by pushing the tiny cart around the store, waving at other shoppers as they passed by. This a perfect snapshot of his humor and the joy he brought to everyday moments.

Caleb was more than my brother in-law. He was only 11 years old when I met him and started dating Josh. I had the honor and privilege of watching him grow up. This picture was from his High School graduation and I felt like a proud older sister. He always made me feel like one of his siblings. He never treated me any different than that, which I loved. Caleb had a way of making you feel a part of something and for me, he made me feel a part of the Furnas family. He embraced me immediately and started cracking jokes with me. Humor was his super power. His goal in life was to make everyone around him laugh, even if it meant making himself look goofy or ridiculous. He didn't care. He just loved to make others feel good. I miss him so much.

2019
Two months after meeting, Caleb took me on my first ever road trip and hike. A few minutes before this photo, he’d revealed to me that the “15 mi.” marker was “miles” not “minutes.” We nearly got lost in the woods and were literally inches away from stepping on a rattlesnake! Caleb really could smile through anything
Memories of spending weekend after weekend at the Furnas’ house for years is something I look back at fondly. Though Caleb was a couple years older than his sister and I, he was always game for anything and the voice of reason when he needed to be. From playing the GameCube or goofing around outside or in the church, he was always full of joy and infectious laughter. While we grew apart over time, these memories and the Furnas family hold a very special place in my heart. I am so sorry for your loss. ❤️

It was an honor to have met Caleb and call him a brother over the last few years. My heart aches at his passing, and for the Furnas family.

I didn’t know Caleb for very long but we bonded quickly over our love for our dogs. Boy did he love Oskar! Please give Oskar kisses from me and Athena. He also spoke about his family with so much love. We will be doing a puzzle for you Caleb at the local dive just like we always wanted to do. 🤍 Thank you for leaving a lasting impact on me in a such a short time and I’m so sorry for your loss.

We are heartbroken for your loss and praying for your family.

Love,

Keith & Tonya
