Byron attending the retiremen…
2019, Boulder, CO
Byron attending the retirement party for Nezette Rydell, Meteorologist-In-Charge of NWS Boulder. His presence would always light up the room!
I must share these rare snap shots of Bernard taken during his early days with the Weather Service. First photo was taken at the NWS Training Center in Kansas, City near his very first day with the "bureau". Not entirely sure when it was taken - I'm guessing sometime in 1980 or 1981. No meat on his bones back then. LOL :-) The next one of Byron was taken with his co-workers at the NWS Forecast Office at Denver's Stapleton airport in 1984. The last one was taken of his former supervisor at the Denver NWS office, Maury Pautz, at Maury's retirement party circa 1988. You must admit, Bernard had style - he knew how to dress to kill - and was ALWAYS the best dressed guy in the room. :-)

I was shocked when I found out Byron passed away. I had the good fortune to work down the hall from Byron when he was at the NWS and I was working for a NOAA lab in close proximity. Bryon had the absolute best smile and it was true - he could light up a room with that smile. He had a great sense of humor and always was quick to make me laugh. We both had the same group of Kaiser neurosurgeons and we often compared notes. I have so many memories of Bryon - all of them good and all I will cherish. My heart goes out to his family. He was a one of a kind special person. I feel honored to have known him and call him a friend.

If you were so fortunate to know Mr. B, I need not tell you how special he was. Byron was many things to many people; a gentleman, a mentor, a brother, a confidant, a person who could make you laugh so hard you would nearly stop breathing. He was a man of compassion and humility, who wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Some (including me) thought of him as a big teddy bear with a heart of gold. I met Byron my first day working as a student intern at the National Weather Service Forecast Office at the old Stapleton Airport in Denver back in the spring of 1986. By the end of my first day in the office I knew I had made a lasting friend. It was a joy going to work at the Weather Service everyday, especially when Byron was there. Yes, his jokes were funny and his laughter contagious, but his beef and pork ribs were out of sight! I only wish I enjoyed playing cards and bowling as much as B. We could have spent more great times together.

The world has truly lost a very special person, but those of us who knew him will never forget Mr. B.
As each & everyday passes my heart weights heavier, still unbelievable. Uncle I love you dearly! You were present the day I was born & from that day you never failed to make yourself known to majority of my events. I appreciate you dearly. You were a second father to me. I remember how I would wait by the door when I was younger to go to work with you. Those were the goods days & I wish I could go back to reminisce each & every moment I had with you. I appreciate you for allowing me to come to work with you. I also reminisce back in 2016 when you & I spent a month for your daughter wedding in Florida. I appreciate you inviting me to send that time with you. As the days pass I have to remind myself you are in a better place & GOD has you now. Oh how Ill miss your warm tight hugs & kisses. Until we meet again Ill make sure I live your name up.

You hear the term 'Gentle Giant' and that was my impression of his heart. I did not cross paths with Byron as often as many others did but his presence was so real. He was there in the moment with you. As a group [the DAPM Corps] we were in a unique position in a unique period of time within the history of the NWS. That was not lost on him and he did his job proud. Words fail at these times, so take heart in that the gentle impression he left on this Earth. Peace.
Sending love to my family and honour and praise to God for blessing us all with such a genuinely caring and selfless man in my Uncle Bernard.
