Brendan's obituary

It is with tremendous heartache our family shares the passing of our beloved Brendan Djentle Bear (Jennings) Hamilton. Brendan’s sun suddenly set on Monday, December 23rd, 2024.

Brendan danced through life with an indescribable style and flair, living each second as his most authentic self. He was an intensely passionate human with unmatched curiosity to understand the world and people with whom he shared it with. Brendan’s ability to connect with others in the most ordinary of circumstances was one of his greatest strengths. He found immense joy and fulfilment in cultivating deep connections with others and in bringing individuals together to share, learn, and grow in community.

Brendan journeyed many paths and grew a resume longer than most of us could imagine for ourselves. He was an Athlete, Burger Flipper, Dishwasher, Food-Expeditor, Ski Instructor, Body Builder, Rugby Coach, Rig Worker, Volunteer with the Calgary Dolphins Swim Club, Ladies Night Promoter at Cowboys Nightclub, Competitive Eater, Stand Up Comedian, Coffee Roaster, Bus Driver with Calgary Access Bus Service, Content Creator, Associate Stylist of Men's Wear, Dancer and Choreographer of multiple genres (including one single night as an Amateur Exotic Dancer in Montreal), Painter, Tree Planter, Web Designer and Grant Application Consultant for Small Businesses, Pine-Pollen Harvester, Roofer, Landscaper, Poet, Yogi and Artist… we are likely missing a few others.

Brendan was an incredibly spiritual individual. Throughout his life he explored and developed his connection to God, his Metis Heritage, Mother Nature, Meditation and Music, all of which built the foundation for his incredibly kind and loving spirit. Brendan loved to share and grow in his spirituality with others,  many of you prayed, meditated, practiced yoga, sat or stood in ceremony or attended concerts with him, which if you knew Brendan, you knew this was his favorite "Church".

Brendan had an infectious thirst for knowledge. From an early age he developed a love of reading and story-telling; his love of sharing those words was inspiring. When you shared time with him in conversation you rarely came away without learning something new or viewing things with a deepened perspective.  If you received a gift from Brendan it was most likely a book with a personalized message, which he had thoughtfully written for you on the front page. His knowledge base was immense, as was his desire to share it with the rest of the world.

Brendan was enrolled at the Alberta University of the Arts where he was working towards a degree in Design Studies. He enjoyed learning about and working in a variety of artistic mediums and styles, including drawing, photography, painting, sculpture and graphics. Brendan developed a distinctive architecture for his work which was most often born onto paper as colorful fine line drawings often accompanied with typed or handwritten phrases or poetry. Brendan's art was heavily influenced by his life experiences, his ongoing exploration of the connection to one's self, as well his questioning to understand our purpose as humans.

Brendan leaves on earth his Mother, Carla-Jo; Father, Bruce; Brothers Sterling and Jonathan; Sister, Christie; Sister-in-laws Jaime and Morgan, his 8 nieces and nephews, Braedi, Ethan, Nalaini, Rhys, Harlow, Kael, Reid and Owen, as well as an incredible circle of friends whom he considered his immediate family. He is additionally survived by many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and his Grandmother.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Calgary in the coming weeks to honor Brendan. Our family will update the Events section of this page once details are confirmed.
