Blanche's obituary

Born on May 13, 1936 to the late James and Cora Martin, Blanche being the youngest of her 12 siblings, graduated from Old McCormick High School in 1954.   She decided to leave her small town and move to Queens, NY in 1956. Shortly after arriving to the big city she met and married her late husband Arthur James Williams in 1957. She had her daughter Deborah Elnora 1958 and in 1960 she had her son Michael James Leon.

In her early years, she held several careers from working in electronics to becoming a successful saleswoman selling jewelry and perfume. Her love of sewing led her to be a sought-after seamstress making clothes and bags for herself, her children and many outside clients.

She enjoyed being active in the community and joined a social group with her cousins and friends called the Debonairs; together they worked to raise awareness for sickle cell disease. She went back to school while in her 50's attending Manhattan Community College where she earned a certificate as a Paraprofessional teacher. She joined the NY Board of Education around 1990 and retired in 2006. She always had a love for kids and said "they kept her young'.

Blanche's hobbies included reading, writing, acting, public speaking, gardening and most importantly, being an active participant in her Church. She greatly enjoyed attending service and serving God.  She was deeply rooted in her faith and served as a president of the usher board at Shiloh Baptist Church in Jamaica, NY. and later in the 80's she joined Southern Baptist Church where she was also an usher. You could always count on Blanche to bring her tambourine and praise the Lord.

Those that knew her would describe Blanche's personality as vibrant , energetic and full of life and laughter.  She loved to entertain and host social gatherings, including backyard BBQs in the summertime. Always down for adventure, she loved to travel and take trips with her friends. Besides traveling most of the USA she's taken trips throughout the Caribbean and has vacationed in several countries from Mexico and Spain to Greece and Italy.

Blanche is survived by her Daughter, Deborah Williams, her Granddaughter and Grandson-in-law, Tiffany and Gilson Martinez and a hosts of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She will be forever loved and missed dearly in this life and the next.

In celebration of Blanche's life, a service will be held on April 15, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Southern Baptist Church.
