Little hard to imagine I'm posting this, because of losing my dear cousin Betty. The first memory I have is of her and her sisters ,when they lived in Lovelock, Nev. mega years ago . Wild and crazy kids, must have been the territory. Not much interaction , except at auntie Anne's , then we were just little kids. She was real, that's for sure and a lot of you know the rest. I can't imagine growing up with her influence, but she was a true force. Love you Betty, don't know if you believed in God and the hereafter, but my prayers are for you, hopefully he's listing.  Cousin Nick

Eugene, 13th and Ferry apartment, occupied by four Richmond gang members:. Betty, Mary, Patty and Joan.

Betty had established The Stones as being the best rock and roll band ever.  I still love The Stones and prefer their older tunes.  One night we should have been studying, but were not.  We had the stereo cranked up and Betty and I, maybe a third dancer, were practicing our go go dancer moves on the kitchen counter.  There was a knock on the door and in walked our landlady.  Fortunately she was very kind and just asked us to turn the music down.

It was a fun year!

Post college I lived in a shared house in NW Portland with Betty and several others. Cooking and dishwashing duties were shared. One night Betty was scheduled for dishwashing but instead split for the Tavern. Considerably annoyed, I loaded all the dirty dishes into her bed and pulled over the covers.  The result was my first and last encounter with the “Wrath of Betty “.  She will be sorely missed.

I am so saddened to hear Betty is gone. I have so many memories of her tenacity, like her identifying the Fred Meyer bra “pee er”. We had so many laughs and great conversations at work at the East Branch Welfare office. And I will always remember our shopping sprees at the Norm Thompson sale. Great times. I will miss Betty. We often talked on the phone after I moved away from Portland. I miss those calls.

Just to help establish Betty's hippie cred: when I was in the 6th grade (!), she chaperoned a friend and me to the Grateful Dead show. I had just finished my 6th grade year, and managed to secure 3 tickets by being the right caller on a radio show. My friend Darren and I bussed down to the Memorial Coliseum and waited in line all day with all the other DeadHeads, and Betty came down after she got off work and met us in line.  I'll always remember her smirky shrug when the joint came down the row.

This was June 12th, 1980, considered among DeadHeads to be a legendary show, much sought after in the bootleg tape scene. During the show, Mount St. Helens blew up the second time, and ash was coming down like snow after the show in the parking lot.

My husband Chet and I had the good fortune to move in next door to Betty nine years ago. She marched right over and demanded to help out with keeping an eye on the house, watering our plants while away, and updating us on neighborhood gossip. We miss having her around…she was such a great neighbor, and such a great character.
