Bette Courtney, our belated grandmother, died on December 27, 2009, just about three weeks after her 83rd birthday, in Sacramento, California. Her story begins on December 5, 1926, in Oklahoma, which was the day she was born to two loving parents, Rose and DJ. In 1934, they dust bowl came and ruined her family’s home several times. In 1943, she met Robert “Bob” Courtney, and they fell in love. On February 7, 1946, Bob and Bette married. That same year, on November 23, 1946, they had an amazing daughter, Janis. Three years later, they had another outstanding daughter, Kathy, on October 27, 1949, who is an amazing parent. But in 1952, they moved to Rio Linda, California, and she lived there the rest of her life. Her husband, Bob, was an active man who built a house there. Bette was a very kind mother who would take care of Kathy and Janis very well. Bette, Bob, Janis and Kathy went to Calvary Lutheran Church, in which Kathy still goes to that church today. On September 4, 1958, they had their third and final child, Debby. Now Janis was old enough to live by herself, and in 1965, Janis married Gary Youngblood. Eventually Kathy grew up and married, divorced, and then married Ed Emmanuels in 1983. Finally, Debby grew up and never married. Sadly, in 1983, Betty’s mother, Rose, passed away, and DJ, Bob, Betty, Janis, Kathy and Debby all attended. Ed and Kathy’s son, myself, loved Bob and Betty. I would have sleepovers with them and eat yummy desserts, and get great presents on my birthday and at Christmas. I loved them. They were the best grandparents ever. But sadly, in 2006, DJ died at the age of 99. But very sadly, that same year, Betty was diagnosed with a major disease. In 2008, she was in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. On December 26, 2009, Betty was frozen like stone and had terribly clogged lungs, so Bob, Janis, Kathy and Debby sent Betty to a hospital, and when she was in the ambulance, she hardly hung to life. She had just turned 83. The next day, Bette sadly died at the age of 83, surrounded by her husband Bob, and her daughters, Janis, Kathy and Debby. It was a depressing day for the whole entire family, that the grandma (now great-grandma, I had a son before she died) we loved so much, had passed away. Bob, Janis, Kathy and Debby spoke at her funeral. In 2015, Bob met with Betty again in heaven.
