Barbara E. Johnson, Beloved Mother, Wife, Nurse, and Advocate, Passes Away at 71

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Barbara Johnson, a compassionate nurse, devoted advocate, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and supporter of veterans. Barbara Johnson passed away peacefully after a battle with lung cancer on March 15, 2024, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Born on December 1, 1952, in Manhattan, NY, to Violet (née LaFronz) and Robert W. Scanlon. Barbara dedicated her life to caring for others. She worked at New York - Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan, St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood. As a nurse, she embodied empathy and kindness, touching the lives of countless patients with her gentle touch and unwavering dedication to their well-being. Her passion for nursing was not just a profession but a calling, and her impact on the healthcare community will be remembered for years to come.

Beyond her professional achievements, Barbara was a tireless advocate for children with special needs. When she became a mother, she transitioned her career to child advocacy and graduated as a paralegal from Bergen Community College. She worked at Child Means Child, which supported and served families and children with special needs across New Jersey. She believed fiercely in children’s right to love, support, and have access to resources. Her advocacy was a testament to her compassionate nature and her commitment to making the world a better place for those most vulnerable.

Barbara had a zest for life that was infectious to all who knew her. Her great sense of humor could brighten even the darkest of days, and her laughter echoed in the hearts of those who loved her. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was traveling to new destinations, dancing to her favorite tunes, singing along with her loved ones, or spending time with her beloved dogs.

Family meant everything to Barbara. She adored her children and grandchildren, and her love knew no bounds. Her unwavering support and unconditional love were the foundation upon which her family flourished, and her memory will continue to be a source of strength and inspiration for generations to come.

In addition to her dedication to her family and profession, Barbara was a staunch supporter of veterans. She had been donating to and supporting the Wounded Warrior Project since 2011. She recognized the sacrifices they made for their country and worked diligently to ensure they received the respect and gratitude they deserved.

She was a resident of Demarest, NJ, and was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Angels in 1970 (also in Demarest). She was active in her community, volunteered for many of the town events, and ran for town council.

Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and service that will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. Though she may be gone, her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched and the memories she created.

Beloved wife of 40 years to Kennith C. Johnson. Loving mother of Timothy (Lorri) Johnson, Nicole (Joseph) Azzari, and Robert Johnson. Cherished daughter of Violet Scanlon, treasured sister of Robert Scanlon, and dearest grandmother of Roselyn Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Demarest Volunteer Ambulance Corps (P.O Box 131, Demarest, NJ 07627) or the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, in honor of Barbara.

All are invited to gather directly at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 199 Walnut St, Northvale, NJ 07647, for a mass at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024.

Visitation will follow Barbara’s funeral mass on Wednesday, March 20th, 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, at the Frech-McKnight Funeral Home, 161 Washington Ave, Dumont, NJ, 07628.

Rest in peace, Barbara. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
