Echoes

The first echo an ultrasound announcing that he’s near:
a heartbeat tiny, but so strong, sends shivers—welling tears.

Tip-toeing echoes across the floor for one more peek inside,
to watch as he lies sleeping by a mobile made of stars.

A smile, laughter, and first steps echo on kitchen tile,
the pat-pat-pat of bare feet, to outstretched waiting arms.

Then Christmas echoes! Bows and boxes, noisy squeals of glee;
the presents done, hold him tight, until with squirms you set him free.

The echoes louder, bare feet covered, in running shoes or Vans,
he races out, “Bye mom!"—"Love you too!" you hope he heard.

Years pass by, the echoes distant, race for a singing phone,
that special ring set just for him, to comfort when alone.

All the echoes silenced now,
no longer to be heard,

until a glance familiar, or taste unexpected,
or notes played just so, belies that he is near.
