Professor Cast was one of my favorites I’ve had at UCSB. I always looked forward to class with her. She is hilarious and brilliant, and I look up to her a lot. I wish her peace in her rest.
I am greatly saddened at Alicia's passing. She was a true colleague and friend to so many. She contributed to the department in many ways, and especially to the students. Many undergraduates mentioned  to me over the years that Alicia was a trusted counselor to them, more than an academic mentor, although she was that too of course. Academically she carried on the department's traditional interest in the sociology of the emotions (pioneered by Tom Scheff) and her work addressed endemic problems in the sociology of education. She was a committed feminist and possessed a generous soul. She will be greatly missed. Thanks for everything, Alicia!

I am saddened to hear of this news. Alicia Cast is the reason I became interested in the concept of role-taking. I did not know her personally, but her work inspired me and truly affected the trajectory of my life. I wish I had written to her about this. I send my very best thoughts and prayers for comfort to all of Alicia's family and friends. Her brilliance reached many.

UCSB Sociology Department Main Office
When I came into the office sometimes there was more often than not a warm loaf of banana bread, or an apple spice loaf, or maybe a pumpkin chocolate chip loaf. There would be no note, but we knew who brought them in. Alicia was like an honorary staff member to us. Sometimes we would be in the office working and a plate of chocolate chip cookies would appear. We would say, "Was Alicia here? Did anyone see her?" Then I would look down the hall and say "Thank-you Alicia!" And she would reply, much softer than my loud voice, "You are very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it." We had so many mornings and afternoons of laughter as we shared our stories with something sweet. All of those moments will live forever in our memories.
I am so sorry to hear about Alicia's passing. She was such a kind, loving and caring person. I will miss her terribly. May she rest in peace.
