I met Alan only a few years ago, late in his life, when we rented one of his houses and became his neighbor. He was a very kind man who was always ready to help in any way he could. He often said, “Gielie, If you need anything, just ask.”

The Germans have a word for someone like Alan — a *Mensch*. No other language quite captures it. It is the highest accolade I can give Alan. My condolences to his two lovely daughters, his family and everybody who knew him.

May his soul Rest in Peace and rise in Glory.

A very sad farewell to Alan. In our younger days we spent a lot of time together with Joan and Alan and have fond memories of those times.

Alan was always so entertaining and fun to be with.

Joan, Michelle and Kim, you are very much in our thoughts.

Love Dave, Marilyn , Deanne and Lauren.

Uncle Alan. You have been an incredible uncle, brother, son and dad and your memory will live on in all of us. Gone too soon and I have no doubt you are up there flying high with your mom and our granny. Send her our love and have a cane or 3 on us.  Love Kira, Dom and Addi

You will be missed Uncle Alan. I will always remember times at your house in Joburg, finding chameleons in your garden and being a passenger on your flight and let into the cockpit. It was very special. I hope you are flying high in the sky. Always remembered and forever missed, your niece Leigh
Our condolences to Joan, Kim and Michelle on the very sad loss of Alan who will always be remembered with respect and affection.  A true Gentleman. RIP.
Alan will always be fondly remembered as a very kind and charming gentleman. Over the past 50 years I recall with much affection the great times shared with Alan, Joan and his beautiful daughters in South Africa, London, Singapore and here in Perth, West Australia. I will never forget the thrill of having Alan as our handsome, experienced Captain flying us from London to Johannesburg to meet up with the family in 1984. RIP dear Alan. You are in God’s care. My thoughts are with Joan, Michelle and Kim, June.

From large Spencer family holidays
During the last years of Alan's life, Alet and I had lots of contact with Michelle and Kim, mostly virtual and via WhatsApp. But we did seek Kim on occasion when she visited Alan in Greyton and she also spent a day or 2 at our home in Durbanville, en route to the Far East where she worked at the time. Kim and Michelle were wonderful daughters to Alan; they cared for him deeply and provided care and concern and upliftment as it was needed. Alet and I were privileged to have Alan as a really close friend; and we were privileged to see how Michelle and Kim cared for their dad.

Alan and I met in the late 80s on a beach at Cintsa East in the Eastern Cape – my family and I were holidaying there.

And so I have fond memories!

Alan and I met in a unique way. At the time I was a keen long-distance runner, and I regularly went for a run on the beach; one could run some 11 km. Running on your own is often boring; and then in the distance I saw a tall slim runner; I asked him whether we could run together – it was Alan Spencer. There was a uniqueness to that particular run; we had to cross to fairly shallow rivers during your beachfront; when we got to the 1st river, Alan indicated that he was not going to run any further – he had new running shoes and he was not going to go into the water with the new shoes; and so I said: Alan, get onto my back – and I carried Alan and his new shoes across the river.

Alan and I became friends; Alan was also a keen runner and so we would run the odd race together; our families visited each other at our respective homes.

I remember flying to Windhoek on business one day; Capt. Alan Spencer was the captain on the A320, and I was invited into the cockpit, sitting on the jump seat, observing my friend flying this magnificent machine.

Alan was strikingly handsome in his uniform; I remember sitting in the SAA business lounge one day, and Captain Alan Spencer walked into the business lounge; and the female attention/interest was almost palpable.

Alan and I also did the Otter Trail together, a tough 5- day hike; Alan brought his daughter Kim along and my son Siegfried also accompanied us.

And then Alan and his family moved to Singapore, and we didn’t see each other for some years; but then I had reason to visit London and Alan was flying from Singapore to London, and we were going to be in London at the same time, and I remember us running together in Hyde Park – Alan from Singapore and me from South Africa.

Alan and his family returned to South Africa, and we saw them on occasion at their home in Knysna; when we moved to Cape Town in 2012, Alan had reason to be in Cape Town quite often during the ensuing years and spend quite a bit of time with us at our home in Durbanville.

Alet and I also had the privilege of being with Alan and Kim on the occasion of Alan’s 75th birthday.

We have fond memories of Alan John Spencer.

Our condolences are sent to Wendy , Kim and Michele.

The Spencer family were part of our lives sharing holidays together, sleepovers at Roller St Cyrildene ,and many a party .

Alan went on to fulfill his dream as a pilot, he claimed his furst job in SAA was putting toilet roll on the planes!

Some memories arise:

He and Buster got hold of my parents letters to each other during the war and posred them down Roller St. Much to my mother's embarrassment!

As the youngest member of the gang i was sent up our neighbours mulbery tree and was  left  stranded when Mrs Claydon appeared to find out what we were up to!

Alan also had me as a target when he was trying out his self made now and arrow.Thankfully the arrow hit me on the forehead and didn't cause serious injury!

I  was very sad to hear of Alan's passing snd hope he has found peace.
