Alan and I met in the late 80s on a beach at Cintsa East in the Eastern Cape – my family and I were holidaying there.
And so I have fond memories!
Alan and I met in a unique way. At the time I was a keen long-distance runner, and I regularly went for a run on the beach; one could run some 11 km. Running on your own is often boring; and then in the distance I saw a tall slim runner; I asked him whether we could run together – it was Alan Spencer. There was a uniqueness to that particular run; we had to cross to fairly shallow rivers during your beachfront; when we got to the 1st river, Alan indicated that he was not going to run any further – he had new running shoes and he was not going to go into the water with the new shoes; and so I said: Alan, get onto my back – and I carried Alan and his new shoes across the river.
Alan and I became friends; Alan was also a keen runner and so we would run the odd race together; our families visited each other at our respective homes.
I remember flying to Windhoek on business one day; Capt. Alan Spencer was the captain on the A320, and I was invited into the cockpit, sitting on the jump seat, observing my friend flying this magnificent machine.
Alan was strikingly handsome in his uniform; I remember sitting in the SAA business lounge one day, and Captain Alan Spencer walked into the business lounge; and the female attention/interest was almost palpable.
Alan and I also did the Otter Trail together, a tough 5- day hike; Alan brought his daughter Kim along and my son Siegfried also accompanied us.
And then Alan and his family moved to Singapore, and we didn’t see each other for some years; but then I had reason to visit London and Alan was flying from Singapore to London, and we were going to be in London at the same time, and I remember us running together in Hyde Park – Alan from Singapore and me from South Africa.
Alan and his family returned to South Africa, and we saw them on occasion at their home in Knysna; when we moved to Cape Town in 2012, Alan had reason to be in Cape Town quite often during the ensuing years and spend quite a bit of time with us at our home in Durbanville.
Alet and I also had the privilege of being with Alan and Kim on the occasion of Alan’s 75th birthday.
We have fond memories of Alan John Spencer.
