Frequently asked questions
Answered by MedCure
-
Are ashes returned to the family at any point?
When you have filled out our Donor Consent forms you can designate at that time to send ashes to a loved one and submit their address. Ashes are typically returned within an average of about 5 months after passing.
-
Are there any costs to the family?
Once a MedCure donor is accepted for final transportation, all donation-related expenses will be covered. This includes transportation arrangements made by MedCure, one certified copy of the death certificate, cremation, return of partial cremated remains to the family or at an ossuary. If the family contacts a funeral home on their own at the time of passing, this could result in the family being responsible for those expenses.

Q&A
I am fat, does this prevent me from donating my body and if so, why?
– Carol-Marie K.
We have both an upper and lower limit for a donor's weight, as well as for their BMI (body mass index), which is a comparison of their height and weight. As our acceptance criteria is based on the current needs of the medical community which we serve, and those needs can sometimes change, our acceptance criteria frequently change as well. Typically, our weight limit falls between approximately 75-275lbs, but our BMI acceptance range can vary drastically.
We recognize that an individual's weight can fluctuate and that weight gain or loss at the end of life can be a side effect of medical conditions. We always advise that you or your family call us if you are ever placed on hospice care or given a life expectancy of 6 months or less so that we can complete the eligibility screening to see if your weight and BMI are within our current acceptance criteria. However, most people who wish to make a whole-body donation are eligible!
How do I register for the whole Body Donation program?
– Debra L.
Hi Debra.
You can go to MedCure.org and scroll all the way down. You'll see a link that says "Whole Body Donation Forms" in our footer. Fill those out and e-mail or send them back to us. This is the best way to register your intent to have your body donated to science after you pass.
You can also call the toll-free number on our page and request to have some consent forms sent directly to your home, if you prefer. Hope this helps.
