About Dalhousie University Human Donation Program
The Human Donation Program at Dalhousie University accepts donors from the Maritime provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick & Prince Edward Island). These donors provide essential anatomy training to upcoming healthcare professionals and clinical skills training to current healthcare professionals.

Are all potential donors that have filled out paperwork automatically accepted into the program?
NO, please ensure you and your family have alternate arrangements in case of refusal. Acceptance into the program can only happen at the time of passing by the Inspector of Anatomy

Is there an age limit?
No, we accept donors of all ages, provided they are over 19 years of age.

Are ashes returned to the family at any point?
Yes, the donors remain in the program for 1-3 years and then the next of kin may decide to inter them at our cemetery in Lower Sackville, claim the cremated remains or have them shipped via Canada Post.

Are there any costs to the family?
All costs for transportation, documentation and cremation are covered by Dalhousie. If the donor requests burial of cremated remains in our cemetery in Lower Sackville, interment fees are covered as well.
If the family chooses to retain the cremated remains, interment costs will be the responsibility of the family.
If the donor is refused at the time of death Dalhousie is not responsible for any funeral costs. -
Can body donation be organized by the next of kin post-mortem?
Yes; however, it is strongly recommended to complete intent to donate forms before the donor's death these can be found on our webpage www.dal.ca/bodydonation or by calling 902-494-6850

How are bodies donated to your organization used?
Our donors are used to educate students in multiple disciplines of healthcare, including, Physicians, Dentists, Occupational and Physical Therapists, and more. In addition they are used for clinical skills training of current healthcare professions, including, teaching life saving skills and procedures and surgeries.
