Winkie's obituary
Winifred “Winkie” Nesbitt Game died June 13, 2024 in Tampa, Florida. She was born in Tampa to Tom and Maxine Nesbitt on December 29, 1938. A graduate of Plant High School, Winkie attended Wesleyan University in Georgia, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia where she met James Grantland King. In 1960, she and Grantland married and made Atlanta their home.
Winkie and Grantland had two sons, Grant and McGregor. The family moved to Tampa where Winkie finished her degree at the University of Tampa. In 1977, Grantland passed away. In 1979, she married Paul Game, Jr. Together they traveled the world and included family as part of their adventures.
Winkie was very active in her family’s life, as well as in the Episcopal church, especially at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tampa. At St. John’s she served as an Education For Ministry mentor, was a Vestry Warden, Stephen Minister, Lay Eucharistic Minister, Lay Reader, Chalice Bearer, and member of the Daughters of the King and the Altar Guild. Winkie and Paul represented the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida in multiple national conventions, were the leaders and participants of multiple Cursillo and Discovery weekends, as well as in Kairos Prison Ministry.
Winkie’s most profound spiritual gift was presence. She made the many who received her care feel as though nothing was more important to her than their time together, whether sharing communion at home, offering a prayer in the hospital, or enjoying conversation at the kitchen table over a cup of coffee.
Winkie was active in Colonial Dames. She and Paul shared a love of sailing, including her time in the Mainsheet Mamas at the Tampa Yacht and Country Club and the travels on their sailboat, the Kairos. Winkie’s love for sailing began on starlit nights with Paul on Tampa Bay during their courtship.
Winkie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Thomas Nesbitt and sister Patricia Bragg, her first husband Grantland, her daughter Pamela Game, and her niece Elizabeth Nesbitt. Winkie is survived by her husband Paul, children Grantland (Nancy) King, McGregor (Kim) King, Richard (Anne) Game, nephews Patrick Bragg, William Nesbitt, nieces Sara “Ann” Robinson (Rob), Catherine Terry (Russell), Marian Nesbitt, Ender Nesbitt, and multiple cousins. She is also survived by her grandchildren Elizabeth and James King, Milo King, Phillip Game, and Hope, Allison and Caroline Game.
A service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tampa at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 3, 2024 (livestream link), after which her ashes will be interred in the church’s Chapel of the Resurrection and the family will then receive friends in the church parish hall. The family thanks Winkie’s caregivers Maria Conanan and Jessica Macowsky, as well as the staff of South Tampa (Memorial) Hospital, and Melech Hospice House for the excellent care that Winkie received.
