Personal note from Jen Norris, Bill's Step-Daughter/Paul's Daughter

Hi there,
Sometimes people want to know what happened in more detail, so I will share a bit about the past three years. Bill Waffle died early on the morning of Sunday, August 27, 2023 in a new to him rehab in Fort Lauderdale.

Bill had been living in a retirement community in Fort Lauderdale. Oasis, since October 2020. His mobility had been declining for some time. His weaker leg, causing falls on uneven Philadelphia pavers and icy sidewalks. He used a walker, but mostly in Florida he got around on a red scooter.

Bill spent time each day in the sun, tanning and counting the iguanas by the property ponds. He had friend and regular meal companions, attended mass, and sang in the choir there.

A funeral mass was performed by Bill's friend and priest, Father Ed, on the morning of Bill's passing. We are planning to host a virtual memorial in October, if you would like to attend you would be most welcome. Please use this memorial website to post your own memories, photos, and condolences as well as sign up for notifications regarding the memorial. You are also welcome to give me a call. I like to hear people's memories of Bill.

His friend and former Old City neighbor, Jeff H., got Bill moved in October 2020 (mid-pandemic) to Fort Lauderdale, before another Philly winter did Bill in. Jeff lived nearby in Florida, and called Bill every morning to give him a hard time and make sure he was up and about. Jeff acted as the guardian of Bill's remaining assets and looked out for Bill in so many ways for which I and the rest of Bill's family are very grateful.

At the time of his passing Bill was at a rehab in Fort Lauderdale, having been in and out of the hospital and/or a rehab all summer long. He had a small stroke at the end of May and between RSV, COVID, and then pneumonia this summer, he continued to lose strength. While his passing wasn't expected, it may have been a blessing as his physical decline meant he was not going to be able to live independently in an assisted-living apartment in his community any longer and I think even Bill the optimist would have disliked a nursing home.

He will be interred next to my father Paul Norris, in Trinity Cemetery and Mausoleum in upper Manhattan.

Thanks for being his friends and colleagues. I would be most grateful if you would share this with others who knew him.

With sympathy,
