Billy's obituary

William Jay Spoon was born on May 17th, 1958, to Lionel Eugene and Barbara Carol Spoon. He was the second of three children, with his older sister Laurie Beth as the firstborn and his younger brother David Scott as the youngest. From an early age, Billy displayed a remarkable interest in music. What began as a fascination quickly grew into a lifelong passion, shaping him into a professional player, an extraordinary singer, and a gifted composer. His natural abilities and love for sound set the stage for the legacy he would leave behind, both in music and in faith.

Billy was raised in a Jewish home in Detroit, Michigan, where family traditions and heritage were active. After moving to Phoenix, Arizona, his life changed forever. It was there that he first heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ and surrendered his heart to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. Just as Andrew brought his brother Peter to Jesus in the Gospels, Billy immediately reached out to his brother David and introduced him to the saving grace of Christ. With determination and tenacity, the two brothers became the very first Christians in the Spoon family line. During this time, Billy’s closest friend, Bruce, walked alongside him. Their friendship lasted throughout Billy’s entire life, and their bond was one that distance and time could never diminish.

In Phoenix, Billy quickly became a voice of faith within the Christian community. He wrote worship songs that resonated with the hearts of believers, led worship in churches across the city, and carved out his own distinct style of Christian rock and pop music. His ministry reached thousands, touching lives across generations and backgrounds. As he drew nearer to his face-to-face meeting with Jesus, Billy came to realize how many people God had allowed him to bless through music and ministry. It was one of his greatest joys to hear how his songs, words, and faith had pointed others to Christ.

Billy’s personal life was enriched and blessed by his love for his fiancée, Laura June Phillips Isensee. He is survived by his eldest daughter, Allison Jean Spoon; his daughter, Sara Ashley Pulley; and his adoring grandchildren, Madilyn Pulley, Evelyn Pulley, and Delilah Pulley. Billy will be deeply missed by those who truly knew him. Yet for those who believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, this is not goodbye. Instead, it is a joyful anticipation of reunion in eternity—where together with Billy, we will celebrate forever, rejoicing and dancing on streets of gold.
