The Rupe's were involved with the San Antonio Conservation Society and NIOSA for over 20 years, as well as being fixtures in the communities of their children's schools and athletics at St. Luke’s Episcopal School and TMI Episcopal. In their off-time, Bill and Nancy enjoyed family vacations to Port Aransas and Rockport, Texas, where they would spend their time fishing, boating, beach combing, and perusing the art galleries. Later in life, the couple enjoyed outings around Texas with the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society. They were also members of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, the Texas Association of Cactus and Succulent Societies, and the Austin Cactus and Succulent Society. An avid sports fan, Bill enjoyed playing golf and watching the Houston Astros, Dallas Cowboys, and San Antonio Spurs as well as his beloved University of Texas Longhorns.

Some of his more notable projects over his career included work on: the Witte Museum, San Antonio Zoo Flamingo exhibit, St. Luke's Episcopal School addition, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church renovations, St. Christopher's Catholic Church addition, Institute of Texan Cultures renovations, Texas Military Institute new campus, Burbank High School renovations, St. Mark's Catholic Church Sanctuary, San Antonio International Airport Terminal expansion and renovations, and multiple projects at Southwest Research Institute, the old Pearl Brewery site, and Texas Med Clinics.
