William's obituary

Sorry Dad, your birth certificate shows you were born in Kansas City, Missouri not Kansas on May 8, 1929. He passed away October 15, 2018 in West Chester, Pennsylvania surrounded by family.
For many years, he was a salesman in Miami, Florida and Lakeland, Florida. Dad also worked for a thoroughbred horse trainer on the California circuit before retiring in 1999 to Kansas City, Kansas to live near his brothers. In 2009 he moved to Kennett Square, Pennsylvania to live with his daughter, Jean and her family.
Dad enjoyed following college football, especially the Miami Hurricanes and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and KU basketball (Rock chalk, Jayhawk). In reality, he would watch just about any sporting event.
He also liked to travel – Ireland, England, France, Belgium or the USA. Susan and Jean put more miles on his car with trips to Wisconsin for the wedding of his granddaughter Samantha and going to a football game at Notre Dame. He was thrilled to attend the 4th of July celebration in Washington, DC one year and Boston the next year.
Dad would read the newspaper from cover to cover. When the papers had “classified ads”, Dad could quote you the price for Labrador puppies or tell you there was a piano for sale. He passed his love of reading to his children – mysteries or romance novels – it didn’t matter.
And he loved to sit out in the sun, warming his bones.
Preceded in death by his sons Billy and Tom and his three brothers, Joe, Jim and Tony, Dad is survived by his children, Susan Cohen, Jean Haines (Dave), John (Marlene) and Mary Mangus; grandchildren, Samantha Schmitt, Dave and Alison Haines, Misty Hicks, Matt and Michael Moran; seven great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 10 am on Saturday, November 17th at Resurrection Church, 3000 Videre Drive, Wilmington, DE. Mass will follow at 11 am. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kennett Library, Kennett Square, PA; Kennett Senior Center or your favorite charity.
