Paul's obituary
William “Paul” Montgomery
September 17, 1931
December 13, 2023
Peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg in the early hours of December 13th with family by his side.
Beloved husband of over 64 years of Rilla (Nugent). Cherished father of Cynthia, Dan (Kelly), Chris (Darlene), and Tim (Robert). Adored Grandpa/Poppa of six perfect grandchildren: Liam, Spencer, Jane, Cooper, Aidan and Shannon.
Paul was pre-deceased by all three of his siblings and their spouses: Dalton and Claris Montgomery, Graydon and Ludell Montgomery, and Garth and June Harrison, as well, of course, by his cherished mother and his father. He was further pre-deceased by his beloved niece Karen Montgomery, son-in-law Tom Fotheringham, brother-in-law Malcolm MacDonald, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Archie and Gerri Nugent.
Paul was born in the family farmhouse in tiny Parker Hill, Quebec. His small town upbringing taught him to be a friend to all and he cultivated a life long interest in knowing his neighbours and talking to people. He worked for decades in the Accounting Department of General Electric (later Camco) in Montreal, but his interests lay elsewhere. Paul and Rilla were a great pair of dancers and travelled for square dancing. After retirement, Paul and Rilla also took time to enjoy travel within North America and Europe. Paul enjoyed cycling, games of cards, fiddle music, long walks, and spent hours tending to his beautiful displays of flowers as soon as spring allowed. His love of gardening and community even led him to plant a full garden behind the backyard fence for the enjoyment of the recreation path users.
Paul’s main and everlasting joy was family. Be it visiting with one person or a large multi-generational reunion, Paul enjoyed it. His hobby for years was tracing the families’ histories through information and photos. His memory for family connections was unmatched.
Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity Paul supported – either The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the CNIB. There will be a celebration of Paul’s life in Spring 2024 when the flowers are blooming, we can honour him properly, and more of us can gather. For details, visit: https://everloved.com/life-of….
