Bill's obituary
William "Bill" Henry McGovern, III passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024, in Elk Grove, California, at the age of 82. Bill lived the early years of his life in Portsmouth, Ohio and later relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1968. He was a kind, curious-minded, and loving brother, father, grandfather, and friend. He enjoyed a long career as an IT operations manager for various software companies until he later retired and relocated to Southern California. Bill enjoyed experiencing the world around him to its fullest, whether it be through a day at the museum, enjoying a walk, going to the movies, visiting many of the National Parks across the country, or simply diving into one of his favorite mystery novels. Bill was also an avid sports fan with his favorite teams being the Cincinnati Reds, LA Clippers, and the Cleveland Browns.
Bill cherished all the unique relationships he had with his children. He was incredibly proud of each of them and enjoyed spending time in their company. Some of his fondest memories with them included attending Reggae on the River with Bill, adventuring with Todd in the Virgin Islands and Australia, his many visits to Disneyland and MLB Spring training in Southern California with Lauren and finally his special visits to New England and San Diego to see Emlyn. Bill was an enthusiast of the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, attending each year he lived in Southern California, happily having his brother John join him for several. Above all else he most relished in the company and stories of his grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his brother John McGovern, sister Suzanne Monroe, sons William McGovern, IV and Robert McGovern (Tiffany), daughters Lauren McGovern (Brendan) and Emlyn Chase (Colby), as well as grandchildren Rylan McGovern, Croix McGovern, Hudson Chase, Marlow Hill, Summer Chase, and Murphy Hill. He was preceded in death by his mother Suzanne McGovern, father William McGovern, Jr., and sister Christine Gardner.
A memorial service will be held in Bill's honor at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Lockbourne, OH on June 21, 2024 at Noon. Please visit the ‘events’ page for more information and to RSVP.
