William's obituary
William was born in 1962 in a remote village Fujian, China to Siu-Tan Hung and Po-Chu See. He attended Kiangsu & Chekiang Primary School in Hong Kong. Afterwards, he went to the Philippines for high school. William graduated from the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1984. Following graduation, he came to the United States to study at New Hampshire College for a MBA in Decision Support Systems. He then attended the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA, graduating with a MS in Computer Science in 1989.
After graduate school, William went on to work at MIT as a Systems Manager for the Theory of Computation group at MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS), later becoming the laboratory’s Director of Computer Resource Services. In 1997 he and Scott Blomquist started TechSquare, an IT consulting group, named after the place the two had reconnected after grad school, the physical location of LCS and other labs in Kendall Square.
Through TechSquare, for the past 22+ years, William has helped scientists get computers done. Many in the MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, Dartmouth communities and other firms TechSquare worked with welcomed his systems wisdom and ability to solve their computer
problems. Even his children followed his example, and all now work in tech-related fields.
William will always be fondly remembered by all his friends as a simple, very humble and a very thoughtful person. He loved playing basketball back in his teenage days. He was a computer genius and was ahead of his time. As a chemical engineering undergraduate student, he built a working laptop in the early 80s, way before we ever heard of the term "laptop", so perhaps independently he invented the laptop concept. He built this thing inside a briefcase which was running an early DOS and some kind of a word processor he coded himself. It definitely predated most word processors we know today. William also talked about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) would one day be at the forefront of industry- way back in the 80's.
William loved staying current with the world news, and you could often find yourself in a discussion with him about the ongoings of the world. He was a lifelong tinkerer with computers, starting with the Apple II. He loved to take and share photos, especially of the New England fall foliage, and we continually find ourselves grateful for all the memories he documented and left behind.
He is survived by his loving family: in New Hampshire are his wife, Nok, and his three children, Andrew, William Jr, and Tiffany, as well as his family abroad, including his mother, father, and siblings King, John, and Vincent.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Cartier.
