I befriended Will over 30 years ago at Governor’s School at the College of William and Mary, the summer of 1994 before our high school senior year. It was amazing how close we became in just 4 weeks for what would end up being a lifelong friendship. We kept in touch by phone and letters (we didn't have email yet) and we were excited we were both going to UVA together.
Will was so brilliant, but his superpower was his ability to dive deep into any subject (no matter how academic) he could handle anything, and his curiosity and determination was unmatched. Anything he put his focus on, he would succeed at. He was a great role model in college and someone I looked up to, he could balance having fun and traveling while also excelling in his studies. He loved airplanes and was president of the UVA Airship club, was a Jefferson and Rodman scholar, was an expert Command and Conquer player (many hours were wasted in our computer "LAN" parties), and he brought a touch of culture by sharing his love for Spain. He got our friend group to try Spanish Liqueur 43, taught us how to toast in Spanish, and to make sangria and eat paella. His love for Spanish football was unmatched and I am so glad he was able to see Spain win the Euro cup this summer. Will was also my foosball buddy, we played many times at William & Mary and UVA.
From the first day of connecting with Will when we made it to UVA, he introduced me to Bob Sidner, Shom Paul, and Randy Kelley and we all became fast friends in our first year of school. His friend Neil Vachhani from VA Beach would visit us over the first year and throughout our time at UVA. We met Greg Keller, through Bob, at the end of our first year and Randy's brother Ryan transferred to UVA in our second year. From second year to when we graduated, the eight of us were thick as thieves and grew up together at Lambeth and Jefferson Park Avenue apartments.
From going to classes (we were the same major, Systems Engineering), to the UVA football games, playing Spades, to living together for 3 years at school, to traveling for spring break to Cancun, to graduating together, to boating trips with his family Debbie, Ken, and Chris, to following each other's careers, to watching him marry the love of his life Lindsay, and celebrating our 40th birthdays in Vegas together (the last time I saw Will), it’s been a lifetime of joy, laughs, and great times. I regret we did not keep as close as we got older with our own families and living across the country from each other, but one phone call with Will and it was quickly like old times.
Will, we will miss you so very much. I am forever grateful to have you in my life. You touched many hearts in your lifetime and I am glad to have been one of them. Thank you for being my friend and thank you so much for the many memories we had together, too many to mention here. May you rest in peace, brother.
