In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to Madison LakeWay District Memorial Bench.

Background

When thinking about the best way to honor my dad after his passing, nothing felt quite right. He was always the person in my life pushing me to think bigger, and to never let the status quo get in the way of what I knew was right. Over the past few days, it’s become clear that he was a person of significance in the lives of so many others. Whether it be a friend or colleague he knew for many years, or someone he just met once in passing, my dad had a unique ability to make you feel seen. More importantly, he allowed you to feel heard. Listening, he said, is perhaps the most valuable skill a person can have. A skill that he would argue we are losing (and I would always agree). The ability to be present in a moment with another person, unhurried, and without distractions or judgment is the foundation of human connection.

That’s why we have decided to donate a memorial bench in his honor to the upcoming Madison LakeWay District.* A bench that sits along the bike path and overlooks the lake, to celebrate his contributions in both the cycling and marine industries. A bench in his favorite part of his favorite city. A bench that offers a moment of pause, to facilitate those moments of connection he so valued, for years to come.

But we need your help! Any contribution of any amount would be appreciated beyond measure. Together we can give him the kind of memorial that best honors the person he was, and forever is. And to my dad, I'll always be listening.

*About the Madison LakeWay District: The upcoming district covers 1.7 miles and 17 acres of shoreline running from Law Park to Olin Park in Madison, Wisconsin. The park will become one of the most dynamic public gathering spaces in the community, and will include new pathways for bicyclists and pedestrians, a boathouse on Lake Monona, a “lake lounge” next to the Monona Terrace, a 3,000-person outdoor amphitheater, and an elevated nature walk near Olin Park.
