Wayne's obituary

Wayne Eugene "Smitty" Smith, 87, passed away on March 16, 2025, in Troy, Michigan. Born on June 10, 1937, in Danville, Illinois, Wayne lived a life defined by dedication, integrity, and kindness.

Wayne was a proud graduate of Western High School in Detroit, Michigan, class of 1955. Following his education, he joined the Air Force Reserves in the late 1950s in Detroit, demonstrating his commitment to service. His professional career spanned over three decades at Manufacturers National Bank in Detroit, where he worked as a Commercial Closing Agent. Known for his honesty and strong work ethic, Wayne took great pride in his career and the relationships he built along the way.

A devoted family man, Wayne was the adoring husband of Janet Smith (née Galloway) for 63 years. He was a loving father to Kathi (Bob) Vermillion, Robert (Stacy) Smith, and Steve (Jennifer) Smith. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Devon Smith, Evelynne Smith, Brigitte (Trent) Wolf, Lauren Vermillion, Cheyenne Smith, Jonathan Smith, Shane Smith, Isabelle Smith, and William Smith. His legacy extended to the next generation as a great-grandfather to Leo Thompson. Wayne was also a dear brother to Elisabeth Smith. He was predeceased by his recently departed son, Terry Smith.

Wayne had a deep passion for Detroit sports teams and was an avid fan throughout his life. He found joy in music—especially the timeless songs of Frank Sinatra—and spent many hours reading fictional novels and staying informed on current events. Later in life, he discovered a love for gardening and took pleasure in tending to his plants. A man of faith throughout his life, Wayne was also an active member of the Kiwanis service club during his working years.

Those who knew Wayne will remember him as a kind and gentle soul who valued hard work and staying busy. His presence brought warmth to those around him, and his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
