Catherine Schaeffer
1986, Houston, TX, USA to Billings, MT, USA
In 1985 Ben and I went on vacation to Billings MT. My parents lived in Billings and they wanted to show us around the area. Ben and I fell in love with Yellowstone Park, the Beartooth and Absoroka mountains and Montana in general. Once we got back to Houston we discussed what we wanted going forward on our life's journey. Moving to Montana might be fun.. I mean they need roofs every where right. January of 1986 my employer announced that exploration for Exxon was going to shut down, giving me the opportunity to take early retirement. So the decision was made to make the move. In June of '86, along with some help from a couple of friends the ' caravan' pulled out of Houston. I say caravan because you kinda had to see it to believe it. There was my friend Chris in the car with me + 2 cats, 1, 20 # dog and 3 igloo coolers full of tropical fish. There was a 3/4 truck filled with 4 dogs, cloths, and roofing equipment. Last but not least there was a 1 ton truck filled with roofing equipment and pulling a hot kettle... Tropical fish can travel nicely without food for several days. However they need oxygen daily.. So every night we had to stay at a motel to oxygenate the fish. Think we could get rooms on the ground floor? Always the 2nd or 3rd floor. But every night Ben carried those coolers to our room, never once did he complain. Once in Billings we arrived at our rental house and dropped off some things and gave the fish oxygen.. Then we all went to my parents for the night. I mean it's the middle of June the fish will be fine, right? Well, the next morning we went back to the house to get the aquarium setup and when we opened the coolers dead fish were floating everywhere!!! I think we had 3 left.. Ben was like, never again are we hauling fish across country!!! But winters are not for roofers in Montana. Trace called and he had a roofing company he was dealing with and could we come to Phoenix.... So 6 mos later we're moving tropical fish cross country again.. We didn't loose any that time....
Uncle Deuce was one of a kind. The true example of what a cool, fun uncle is. He'd take you fishing, hunting, for a ride in the back of the dump truck down the wash, and show you how to skin and cook a rattlesnake. I remember going out to his place on the ranch, and looking in the fridge for something to eat only to find a 5 gallon bucket of rattlesnakes. Imagine my surprise...13 year old semi city boy to find a bucket of rattlesnakes in the fridge. Uncle Deuce was catching them, and selling them, and "the man paid more of they're alive." I think I'll miss stories like that most of all with him being gone. He was an original, a pioneer, and a good uncle to have. I'll be missing you, sir and I love you!
I was not real sure that tiny wrinkled baby was worth all the excitement. I mean, REALLY?? It was a boy. I had asked for a little sister. The first year wasn't so bad, I got to hold him, and when no one was looking, could dress him up in some of my doll clothes. The second year he got even, getting into EVERYTHING! By year three we were two Musketeers racing through our world, finding treasures, slaying dragons, insuring Mom and Dad sprouted the first gray hairs with which the Chamberlain Clan would gift them. Little buddy, our first twenty years together were filled with memories I will treasure forever. I will not forget your last request to me, a promise made, one I will ensure is done. Big Sister
Last year when I was in Chino we spent three or four days up in the mountains had just a super super great time the both of us love nature the both of us love the outdoors so for us that was a perfect place. When I left we had plans for this year 2019 to spend a whole week in the mountain well obviously that's not going to happen however I would still love to do that so while I was sitting here thinking of this I wondered off in my thoughts and thought. Deuce loved all his children. And their children. And maybe even by now their children's children. The one thing he love the most is when he could sit in a chair and look out and see all of his skin around him. So I thought wouldn't it be wonderful if once a year the Chamberlain and the crenshaw's came together for a day or two in the mountains. He was preparing that place for all of us. Now as most families have squabbles all of us do I personally would not care this would be a day of families reuniting in a place that he had built for us sharing memories sharing stories if need be forgiving each other loving each other and I got to tell you wherever he is looking down on that he would swell with pride and a tear of joy would come to the corner of his eye. And let me tell you the smile on his face would be the most precious thing I've ever laid eyes on. So if the grave robbers in the thieves haven't taken everything up at the mountain that belong to him do we think that is something we could all do is it something we would like to do is it something some of us would like to do. If there's a vote I'm in. I know Debbie and Melody are. I'm sure Tommy and his family would be in Loren would be in and most certainly Lance and his family would be in. my what a wonderful start I would hope that the Crenshaw babies would be in also so what do you think is that something y'all think might happen
A Long, Long time Ago, when I was very young. Deuce took me on, one of many bow hunts in the Yuma Desert. He had made me a stick bow and arrow set.

All at once, I took off running. He chased and chased me. When he finally caught up with me. He asked, "What were you chasing?" and he couldn't stop laughing. I told him I was after a Turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner and Why did he stop me? He could hardly contain his laughter, but he apologized.
Many years later, he told me that I had been chasing a RoadRunner. But he did say, if I had caught it, he would have cooked it for me.
Thank you, Bubba for being you.
The world is a dreary place, just knowing you're not in it.
I met Duece through his sister Melody sometime in the spring of 1987. I was in awe of Duece from that very first day. He had just been bitten by a rattlesnake a day or so before and his hand and fingers were swollen to the point of tearing open. I had never met anyone like Ben before. He definitely impressed me as one of a kind, funny, entertaining, and knowledgeable about so many things that I knew nothing about but was eager to learn. I always said if I had a spare 100K laying around I'd set Duece up in a shop and have him create. The other thing about Ben that comes to mind is that I don't ever remember seeing him angry or mad at anyone and never saw him get bent out of shape about anything. He was a man of good humor that never seemed to let people or circumstances get him rattled. I liked Ben a lot, respected him just as much and admired his good nature, creativity, and resourcefulness and the fact that he lived his life as a free man not restrained by the restrictions of law and society at large.

During the night he lost his battle with some very severe illnesses and his Highway through this life came to an end. I am so grateful and thankful that I was able to travel some of that road with him. The lessons he taught me have carried me through many hardships and heartaches.
