Walter Clarance Shippy, 77, of Spartanburg, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026. Born on September 18, 1948, Walter was a lifelong Spartanburg resident whose life was defined by hard work, quiet strength, and deep love for his family. Walter spent 35 years as a tree trimmer and lumberjack, a trade that reflected both his grit and his connection to the land. When he wasn’t working, he could be found out on Lake Bowen, fishing for bass, catfish, crappie, and his favorite—bluegill—while listening to Curtis Mayfield and The Isley Brothers. He was a devoted husband, married for 53 years to his beloved wife, Evelyn Shippy, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Marcus Shippy (Danielle) of Atlanta, GA, Tonya Shippy-Williams (Derrick) of Charlotte, NC, and Darnell Shippy of Columbia, SC; his siblings, Laverne Shippy, Curtis Shippy, and Roosevelt Shippy; and a host of grandchildren who brought him immense pride and joy. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including Shannon Shippy, Denise Carter, Alonzo Greene, Keisha Jackson, and Marcellus Brown, along with extended family and friends who will cherish his memory. Walter will be remembered for his steady presence, his love for the water, and his deep gratitude for the home he was blessed with through Habitat for Humanity, where he lived for the past 12 years. In honoring his wishes, the family asks that donations be made to Habitat for Humanity to help others experience the same gift of home. A private service will be held in his honor.
