Walter's obituary

Walter O. Oberto Carroll was born in the city of Panama Republic of Panama on December 10, 1939. An entrepreneur born and bred, from an early age, he would buy and sell surplus WW2 GI gear to the local boy scout troops, he was his own Army-Navy store. Coming from a family of modest means, he knew he wanted more for his family and himself. Unbeknown to his friends and family, through hard work and hustle, he managed to get himself a scholarship to the Panamanian IJA, a renowned private school and he graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in accounting. As a brilliant and hardworking auditor, he rose to the position of Roving Auditor and Inspector for the public comptroller and the ministry of finance. This afforded him the opportunity to travel all over Panama and that is when he met the love of his life, the woman who would become his wife of 52 years, Clementina del Carmen Medina. A story he was never keen to recount but nevertheless used as a cautionary tale took place after the 1968 Coup de Eta that saw General Omar Torrijos to power. He was arrested and held as a member of a deposed regime, however, his reputation as a solid, brilliant and unimpeachable nonpartisan employee meant that his knowledge and experience where sorely needed specially in a bureaucracy rife with corruption. Favors and one-upmanship by political apparatchiks lessen his enthusiasm for government work and he decided he could do better. Striking out on his own, he studied and became a financial consultant; he genuinely held education as essential, he sought to further his studies by enrolling and attending Nova University, Panama Annex and with Clementina by his side, they started their own retail boutique business and they prospered. He was able to afford private education for his children, trips abroad to America and Europe, country club memberships and a self-designed summer beach house, he named it Alta Suiza. He was ever thankful to God, his faith a bulwark against the trials and woes life had yet in store for him. The bane of Panamanian politics once again threatened everything he had work to achieve. He was determined that his children’s future would not be held captive by the whims of corrupt, immoral and violent men. He uprooted his entire life and moved as new emigree to America. He lost everything, yet, he was resolved that his children will get a shot at the much-fabled American dream. In this he was successful, his daughter became a noted physician in the Twin Cities, his son like his father became an entrepreneur. Walter Oberto Carroll is survived by his beloved wife Clementina Oberto, his daughter Dr. Mayra Oberto and son in law, Lee Piechowski, his only son Walter Oberto-Medina, Esq.
Daughters; Arianne Oberto, Ginny Oberto, RN. and Lizzy Oberto. He worked tirelessly and sacrificed everything for his family. Some say on our end we are nothing but stories but to his loving family, Walter will remain in joyful memory, stern example and tangible love.
