Ginger's obituary
We regretfully announce the passing of Virginia "Ginger" Johnson of South Gate, CA on January 15, 2023. Ginger was surrounded by her family and passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Ginger, was one of the strongest and most passionate women to ever walk this earth and our family was blessed to have her as the head of the family. Ginger was born to Harry and Luella Mattis in 1947, she was one of 7 siblings. She was a very shy child who kept to herself most the time. She went to Jordan High School from 1963-1966 before she found her love of the restaurant business at La Brick in Bellflower. Soon after, she got pregnant with her beautiful daughter, Marnie. She then met Gary Johnson at the restaurant she was working at, got married and had a son, Dylan. They went on to stay in the restaurant business and bought their first carhop, Lyman's, which they had for a few years before selling. A few years later Gary passed away. Then a handsome cowboy rode into her life and she fell head over heels in love with Tommy Palmiotto, and quickly became part of his big and loving Italian family. Ginger devoted her life to her handicap son who needed around the clock care, and displayed true strength of a mother's love. Not only was she a devoted mother, but she fought for what was right and just in her city. Emerging from her shy childhood came a fierce city council member with incredible leadership skills. We will never be able to fill the void left behind by her.
Ginger was predeceased by the love of her life of 40 years, her partner Tommy Palmiotto, who unfortunately passed only a month prior. She is survived by her best friend and sister Darlene Peña, her daughter Marnie Johnson, her son Dylan Johnson and granddaughter Amber Johnson. Services will be held on Saturday March, 4th at South Gate Senior Center at 11am.
