Virginia's obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Virginia Edith Reynolds on September 16, 2024, at the age of 83. Virginia lived an extraordinary life, marked by her curiosity, intellect, and a deep commitment to education. Born in LaFayette, Indiana, in 1941 to Dr. I. Hubert Reynolds and Dr. Harriet Reynolds, she was raised in a truly unique global setting, traveling the world with her family as they pursued their missionary work.
Virginia spent her early years in China, where her family served under the United Christian Missionary Society. Following political unrest, the Reynolds family relocated to the Philippines, where Virginia attended school in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. These experiences fostered her lifelong passion for language, culture, and global awareness. Fluent in four languages, Virginia pursued higher education at Antioch College and Columbia University (ABD) . She became a distinguished professor, beginning her teaching career at Lycoming College before settling in at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Teaching Anthropology, Sociology, and Medical Ethics, she influenced countless students with her expansive knowledge and passion for education.
After retiring from her academic career, Virginia embraced her love for travel, particularly enjoying time in France, where she learned French, painted, and wrote poetry. She was also an avid practitioner of Tai Chi, meditation and had a deep appreciation for the arts .
Although she wasn’t a traditional mother, Virginia’s love and intellectual influence on her family was profound. Her sharp intellect, polished style, and unique life experiences made her unforgettable to those who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Joanne Arroyo, her grandchildren Michael Arroyo-Young, Mareya Steinbacher, Monica Lange, Hali Epstein, Ella Lalwani, Colton Shirley, and Tre Arroyo, and 12 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Jane R. Hill. Virginia was predeceased by her daughter MaryJane Arroyo-Young and her brother, Dr. Douglas Reynolds. Her parents, Dr. I. Hubert Reynolds and Dr. Harriet Reynolds, also predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held on **October 19, 2024**, to honor her remarkable life and legacy.
