Curly's obituary

Virgil "Curly" Lloys Long Jr.

January 29, 1937 – January 16, 2026

Virgil Lloys Long Jr., affectionately known to all as "Curly," a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at hospice in Rutherfordton, NC at the age of 89. Curly was born on January 29, 1937, in Adaza, Iowa. Curly’s journey was defined by hard work, service to his country, and an unwavering commitment to his family and his faith.

Curly spent his early years in Omaha, Nebraska, before moving to Jefferson, Iowa, during his adolescence. It was in Jefferson where he attended middle and high school. Following high school, Curly honorably served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961. Upon his return, he pursued higher education at Iowa State University, graduating in 1965 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

That same year marked the beginning of a distinguished career with GTE. Curly’s professional journey was one of steady ascent, culminating in his role as Division Manager. While his technical and leadership skills were formidable, he was most respected for the genuine kindness and respect he showed to his employees. He was a leader who truly cared for those he led.

In 1962, Curly married the love of his life, Karon (Lautner) Long. Together, they shared 64 years of marriage, building a legacy of love and faith. Shortly after his retirement, Curly and Karon moved to Mesa, Arizona, where they enjoyed many years of sunshine and community. A man of deep faith, Curly was a devoted member of his local church, where he and Karon found great joy in their fellowship.

Curly was a man of many talents and vibrant passions. He was a man who could fix anything, was an avid golfer and embraced the spirit of the West as a wrangler in Arizona. Those who knew him well will fondly remember his love for dancing, especially the Jitterbug and the pride he took in his iconic purple '67 Mustang.

Above all his achievements, Curly was a dedicated family man. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxine and Virgil Sr.; his daughter, Dian; and his sister, Tina Long (Compton). He leaves behind a large and loving family who will miss him dearly: his wife, Karon; his sons, David (Laura) and Doug; and his daughter, Dena. He was a proud grandfather to David (Kelsey), Casey (Jarrett), Antonio (Hannah), Angelica (Josh), Rayven, and Cameron, and a doting great-grandfather to Isabella, Theo, Jack, Charlie Jo, Samuel, Benicio, and Santino, with another great-grandson, Charles David, expected in April 2026.

Curly will be remembered not just for what he accomplished, but for the man he was: a kind employer, a steadfast friend, and a deeply loving husband and father. His legacy of kindness and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
