Vi's obituary
Viola M. Schaaf, lovingly known as Vi, passed away on April 24, 2026, at The James, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on September 16, 1942, she lived a life defined by strength, resilience, and a deep, unwavering love for those she held close.
A Hilliard resident for over 50 years, Vi retired from The Ohio State University in 2007. For more than two decades, Vi faced significant health challenges. She met every battle with the same determination that shaped her entire life. Stubborn in the very best way, she refused to give in, fighting day after day. Even in the hardest moments—especially in the hardest moments—she held on, wanting to stay just a little longer for the people she loved.
That love was the heart of who she was. In the end, her greatest concern was never herself, but her family. Her quiet, selfless strength is what so many will remember most.
Viola is survived by her daughter, Dawn R. King, and her husband, Gail R. King; her grandsons, Danny Hunter and Ryan Hunter (Cale Minear); her great grandson, Knox Hunter, who brought her immeasurable joy, her brother Bob (Ellen) Gilley, sister Clara Stevenson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jon Schaaf, parents Irene and Robert Gilley; her sister, Donna Heill; her treasured granddaughter, her “Smoochie,” Jessica Sivik and closest friends Jenny Howell and Ruthann Stafford.
Fulfilling a wish she carried for many years, Viola’s family is honored to share that she was accepted into The Ohio State University Anatomy Body Donation Program. They are deeply grateful to OSU for the care and respect shown to her.
Vi will be remembered not only for her strength, but for the moments she shared with those she loved—the conversations, the laughter, and the comfort of simply being together. Those memories remain the most meaningful part of her life and the greatest gift she leaves behind.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
She will be deeply missed and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
