Mr. Campi was without a doubt the heart of CHAMPS. He LOVED his job and being a teacher. He loved making our creative ideas come to life and wanted nothing but to see us reach our highest potential. He was a yes man through and through. A huge loss to anyone who was lucky enough to have him in their life. Thank you Mr. Campi for everything, your legacy will continue to live on.
In late 2008, as I was embarking on a career in charter school education as a first-time college counselor, I had the distinct privilege of meeting and working alongside Vince, who was teaching digital media. He was an extraordinary role model and a steadfast friend at a time when I needed both. For five years, we shared the joys and challenges of working with teens, and I will always treasure that time. Vince had a rare gift for connecting with young people—no one was more devoted to helping them find their way. He made the world a better place, and he will always hold a special place in my heart.
Standing on the top floor of the CHAMPS parking structure... a whole assembly happening in front of us. I'm maybe 2 months into my new life as a teacher... I am talking his ear off about ideas on how we can improve everything about that event and everything else happening... Vince thought at first that I was an idiot, then I saw a twinkle in his eye as my ideas made sense. Then, after about 40 minutes of this... he patted me on the shoulder with a genuine smile and said... "aww you got that new teacher energy." We both laughed. I was a fired-up crash-test-dummy... but it was in that moment that I knew that Vince would be a stalwart mentor and friend on this magic carpet ride of education. He never failed me in that. He was 100% behind me in all things. He constantly challenged me by asking me "what was I doing that was innovative." He constantly supported each chance I took and change I made. We had many 2-3 hour long "quick" chat sessions that turned into deep conversations on life and philosophy and love of teaching. And yes, much of it was filled with laughter and joy. His wit was sharp, his sarcasm was poignant, he smile was infectious.
My condolences to Vince's family and friends! Vince and I were collaborating colleagues in our photography and dance ventures at CHAMPS Charter High School for 17 years. Vince would spend countless late hours in support of our students and our school, he would just show up at our dance venues to take photos without being asked, he was always there! He was a true friend and always encouraged me and he had my back! Vince, you will be missed but not forgotten! Thank you for all your positivity and being such a generous giving human light! Ina
