Veronica's obituary
In Loving Memory of Veronica Gabrielle Lee
January 18, 1940 – April 14, 2026
Born on January 18, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois to the late James M. Stewart and Dorothy Raiche Rigby. Veronica spent her formative years in Gallup, New Mexico, where she attended Catholic school from kindergarten through graduation at Gallup Cathedral High School, Class of 1958. Following high school, she pursued studies in Animal Science at New Mexico State University (then the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts). She completed two years of study before discovering her allergy to certain animals would preclude a career in veterinary medicine. Following the birth of her son, Phillip Lee Jr., she entered the professional world, embarking on a long and respected career with Trans World Airlines (TWA). She started as a travel agent and rose to a senior-level position, remaining there until her retirement.
During these years, she made her home in Los Angeles, the city she loved and resided in for much of her life. Her career allowed her to travel the world - a passion she was able to share with her favorite travel companions: her aunts and cousins. In many ways, Veronica was a beautiful reflection of her grandmother (who helped raise her) and aunts; she took the lessons they taught her and used them to create a life she loved. She was fiercely self-reliant and always found clever ways to build her own path.
A true animal lover, Veronica often shared stories of the many "animal friends" she encountered or adopted, holding a special place in her heart for her cats. She was eccentric in the very best way—unique, delightful, and always unapologetically herself. She possessed a remarkable ability to remain pleasant and happy, regardless of the circumstances; a true survivor who approached life with a smile, finding little joys in everything she did. As she got older, she found happiness in the daily life she built—managing the day-to-day of her apartment complex, enjoying the company of friends and family, and finding fellowship at her local church. Following a period of declining health, Veronica moved to assisted living in Van Nuys, California, where she remained until her passing on April 14, 2026.
Veronica is reunited in eternal rest with her son, Phillip Anthony Lee, Jr. She is survived by extended family and dear friends who will deeply miss her laughter, her unique perspective, and cheerful spirit.
A memorial service to honor Veronica’s life will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup, New Mexico, followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Park.
Flowers may be sent to Rollie Mortuary.
