Vernon's obituary
Vernon Martin passed away on March 14, 2026 in Los Angeles at age 68.
Vernon had been a commercial real estate appraiser since 1984 and had appraised real estate in 42 U.S. States, 4 Canadian provinces and 20 foreign countries. He served as the Vice President for Appraisal Quality Control as well as Chief Commercial Appraiser at Home Savings of America (then the largest S&L) and two other national lenders, and was a former instructor of Real Estate Valuation at California State University, Los Angeles. He earned a Master of Science in Real Estate degree from Southern Methodist University, with highest academic honors, and an undergraduate degree in Geography from the University of Chicago. He was also a Certified Fraud Examiner.
Vernon founded American Property Research in 2006, focusing on due diligence, fraud detection, and foreign asset valuation for U.S. clients. He wrote a book on real estate fraud entitled “Fraud Prevention for Commercial Real Estate Valuation” published in 2011 by the Appraisal Institute. Vernie liked to think of himself as the Lt. Columbo of real estate fraud investigation.
Vernon was born in Staten Island, NY in 1957 and grew up in Denton Texas and Sioux City Iowa. He is survived by his mother, Arlan, his brother, Jeffrey, and his nephew Dale.
