Vernon LeRoy Lindsay was born to Roy and Wilma Lindsay in Tulare CA. While still a child, his parents learned the truth from door-to-door ministers of Jehovah. He had mentioned that as a very young boy he remembers two people coming to his family home. They brought the truth to his family. His early life was not a life of ease. Because of the economic conditions of the times, the family moved often as they traveled up and down the west coast harvesting fruit crops. He left school in 9th grade to help in providing materially for the family. He never complained about having to do that. It was what was needed at the time and he was a strong young man able to work hard and help.
In time the family moved to Fresno where they were able to purchase a small piece of property on the west side of town. The soil on the property was never good enough to farm but it was good enough to build two homes, one for his parents and one for his own family. Very soon after his marriage to Louise, his beloved wife, he started to build, with his own hands, the house that he and the family would live in for several decades as they raised their family. As he cared for his family of four children, what was most important to him was not material advantage but spiritual growth. He recognized that successful life was a life of devotion to Jehovah, not a life of material prosperity. He focused on providing everything he could, but lived so that Louise could stay home and care for the children while he worked to care for material needs. In time, after all the children were grown, they were invited to be the Assembly Hall Caretakers at the Madera Assembly Hall. They served happily together there for 8 years before “retiring” from that privilege and moving to Modesto where he and Louise lived the rest of their lives.
Worship was always first place in the family. Family study was a weekly event. It wasn’t an option to miss. This no doubt contributed to their being able to raise all four of their children to become worshippers of Jehovah too. And he enjoyed many privileges of service. He always tried to say yes to any privilege that came his way. He would sacrifice many hours devoted to his many theocratic responsibilities. One privilege he especially enjoyed and thrived in was the Hospital Liaison Committee he was part of after moving to Modesto. He really enjoyed helping the friends when they were in desperate need of assistance. It was amazing to see a man, with a ninth-grade formal education, speak to doctors about medical needs and procedures available to help the friends in crisis. That is a credit to the training our God Jehovah provides to any who want to avail themselves of it, as he did.
He enjoyed traveling with his wife to many places including attending several International Conventions. These were the things he spoke about often and missed as their health deteriorated and travel became impossible. While traveling he always sought out opportunities to be with his fellow worshipers.
His worship and the spiritual progress and stability of his family were foremost in his life. Because of this his ministry was extremely important. The morning of his passing he conducted his Bible Study with a man who also enjoys reading the Bible and having it explained and appreciating the application of the words. This is a source of pride for his family. LeRoy was first and foremost a dedicated servant of Jehovah. He loved and lived the truth. Even the last day of his life he spent a portion of it helping another person spiritually. We have absolute confidence that our loyal God will remember our father’s faithful service. We know we will see him again…
