Vernard's obituary

Obituary for Vernard H. Atkinson

February 24, 1964 – February 3, 2026

Vernard H. Atkinson, of Dover, Delaware, passed away on February 3, 2026, at the age of 61. He was born on February 24, 1964, in Dover, Delaware, where he spent most of his life and built lasting relationships within his community.

Vernard was a hardworking and skilled tradesman who wore many hats throughout his life. He worked as an 18-wheel truck driver and owner-operator, an HVAC technician specializing in natural gas and propane systems, and a mechanic for both large and small vehicles. He took great pride in his work and was always willing to lend his knowledge and hands to help others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Mae Atkinson, and his sister, Pearl Norman.

Vernard is survived by his loving siblings: Alvin Atkinson, Norma Cyrus, and Irene Atkinson; his daughters, Candie Quick, and Darlene Campbell; along with extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

Vernard loved nothing more than bringing people together. Whether it was hosting weekend bonfires for the neighbors or planning family vacations—always choosing the beach—he found joy in creating moments where everyone could relax, laugh, and connect. Time spent with family and friends meant everything to him. He always had a story to share and was never afraid to speak his mind, offering honesty, humor, and advice—whether you asked for it or not.

Those who knew Vernard often said he had a special ability to read people like a book. He could see the good in others and pushed them to be their best, encouraging and supporting them in ways only he could. At times, his strong instincts led him to offer blunt advice, but many later realized just how right he had been.

Vernard will be remembered for his hard-working spirit, his honesty, his sense of humor, and the love he had for his family, friends, and community. His presence at gatherings, his stories, and his straightforward wisdom will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
