Valerie's obituary
Valerie Jeanne (Lunt) Fleming, passed away on August 21, 2023 in Portage, Indiana. Gone too soon at the young age of 63, Valerie leaves behind a wonderful legacy through the many lives she touched through her kindness, compassion, and Christ-like love for others.
Born in Hinsdale, Illinois on September 7, 1960, she was the youngest of three children born to Clifford and Lucille Lunt. Her parents divorced shortly after she was born, and she moved with her mother and her siblings to California where her mother was from. She spent her school years in the San Jose area and graduated from Branham High School in 1978.
After graduating, she moved to Tahoe with her then boyfriend, Steve, whom she later married. While living in Tahoe, she developed a love for skiing and became an avid skier, and she worked for several years at the First National Bank of Nevada, (later First Interstate Bank), where she developed many lasting friendships. Still living in Tahoe after her divorce, she met the love of her life Dennis Fleming, at the Crystal Bay Club in May of 1987 while his band was playing there. They wed a year later on September 9, 1988 and settled down in the San Francisco Bay Area, eventually moving to Livermore where they lived for over 30 years. Dennis had two children, Christina and David, from his first marriage who resided in Washington with their mother. They would come to Livermore to visit during the summer. Together, Dennis and Valerie had three more daughters, Bethany, Andrea, and Elizabeth.
Apart from her relationship with Christ, Valerie cherished her family above all else. Her desire was to be a stay at home mom and be active in her children's lives, providing home cooked meals for them and to have her home be a safe space for their friends; she showed love to all who entered her home. She was actively involved in her daughters' Girl Scout troops and was the leader for both Andrea and Elizabeth's troops as well as "cookie mom" for all three troops. She loved to help plan events, chaperone trips, and attend camps with their troops as well as her daughters' school activities.
Valerie was actively involved in her church, Harvest Valley in Pleasanton, for many years, some years as a volunteer and other years on staff in various capacities depending on the need. Over the last decade she was heavily involved in the outreach ministry and orchestrated many community events including the annual Harvest Festival and Easter Egg Hunts. Prior to that, she oversaw the children's ministry for many years.
The only thing Valerie loved more than being a mom, was being a grandma. She was just as actively involved in her grandchildren's lives as she was in her children's lives. She took her grandchildren on many adventures while in California and even when she moved to Indiana, that didn't stop her from doing virtual bible studies, and playing board games online with them.
Valerie was a California girl through and through. She loved to go to the beach, camping, skiing and playing in the snow, and she was so fond of the beauty of Tahoe. Her other hobbies included sewing, crafting, scrapbooking and gardening-she especially loved her roses.
Valerie was diagnosed in February 2018 with an aggressive form of breast cancer with a prognosis of 17-21 months. She beat all the odds and lived for 66 months, about five and a half years after her initial diagnosis. In January 2021, she and Dennis sold their house in Livermore and moved to Portage, Indiana, near Chicago, so she could receive treatment at the Block Center in Skokie, Illinois. She ran a great race, and she impacted so many lives along the way. Her love for Jesus and unrelenting faith showed through to all who knew her, and her kind and gentle spirit has left an imprint on many.
She is preceded in death by her father, Clifford Lunt and her mother, Lucille Lunt. She is survived by her husband of 35 years Dennis, her daughters Bethany (Ryan) Florendo, Andrea Norton, Elizabeth Fleming, bonus children Christina (Aaron) Lane, David (Rachel) Fleming, brother Gregory Lunt, sister Sandra (Jeff) Chesler, niece Stephanie Chesler and her many grandchildren.
There will be a Celebration of Life for all who knew and loved her on October 14th, 2023 at 11am at Harvest Valley Church in Pleasanton.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial contributions to the Vanguard Cancer Foundation in Long Beach, CA. This foundation paid for testing related to Valerie's cancer treatment through the Nagourney Cancer Institute.
