Valentino's obituary

Valentino was born June 2, 2005 in San Francisco, California.

Mom arrived at the maternity ward at 12:45 pm and he was born at 12:49 pm! He was the talk of the maternity ward for days for his quick arrival.

October, 2008

Moved to Oakland, California with his mom.

Attended Little Pilgrims Preschool where he made his first best friend, Emi.

Learned to ride a bike, and would take long “Hike and Bikes” with his mom in the Oakland hills.

2010–2011

Attended kindergarten at Sequoia Elementary. Loved art class and bike day.

Learned to ski.

June, 2011

Moved to Campbell, California and in with future stepdad, Ron.

2011-2016

Attended Bagby Elementary.

Took up karate in first grade, and grew to hate it.

Learned to skateboard, but fell in love with scootering.

Learned to snowboard — loved it!

Took up BMX racing in second grade when his friend Caden invited him to try it out. Competed for several years before taking a break.

Tried flag football.

Got a PS-4. Fell in love with gaming. Made a two life-long friends that he would never meet in person.

Taught himself how to fish, and would regularly catch and release in the Los Gatos Creek.

Gave mom away at Melissa and Ron’s wedding.

Summer 2014

Traveled to Greece. Visited the Parthenon in Athens. Visited the Islands of Mykonos and Naxos. Snorkeled in the Aegean.

2016-2019

Attended Price Middle School.

Returned to BMX racing in 2018 and finished 2nd place in the state BMX championships.

Made a lot of friends.

Went on fishing expeditions with his friends Scott and Landon.

Summer 2015

Roadtriped to Wyoming. Camped at Yellowstone. Whitewater rafted out of Jackson Hole. Slept in a tepee. Rode horses in Montana.

January 2016

Went to Science Camp. Learned a lot of science-y things.

Summer 2017

Traveled to Florida. Swam in the Atlantic, snorkeled in the Keys, took a boat trip through the Everglades, fished in Key Largo, and saw manatees.

Hosted his cousin, Clara, in Lake Tahoe. Drove a motorboat, went tubing, went mountain biking, hiked to a waterfall.

Summer 2018

Traveled to Barcelona, Spain to visit with his cousins, Clara and Christopher. Swam in the Mediterranean, hiked the Costa Brava, did a bit of shopping, slept a lot.

Fall 2018

Traveled to Oregon and checked out the beach towns.

2019-2022

Attended Branham High School.

Made a lot of new friends.

Transferred to Leigh High School in the Spring of 2022.

Summer 2019

Traveled to Maui, Hawaii. Snorkeled with sea turtles. Got to drive the rental car on an old dirt back road.

December 2020

Got covid. Felt like the flu. Survived.

Spring 2021

Got 3 pet rats, which he adored and named Nova, Oracle and Jughead.

Got his learners permit and learned to drive

Fall 2021

Got drivers license. Freedom!

Summer 2021

Learned to bake. Became passionate about baking from scratch — lemon cupcakes, blueberry muffins, oatmeal cookies, and pumpkin bread were a few of his favorites.

Spring 2022

Took the California High School Proficiency Exam and passed. Skipped his senior year of high school.

Summer 2022

Traveled to Portugal. Visited Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. Got to see his aunt Nadine, Uncle Mario, and cousin Clara. Shopped for cool stuff. Got a nose piercing. Tried driving a stick shift. Raced go-karts.

Worked at Starbucks. Loved it!

Fall 2022

Started attending West Valley College with a psychology major. Wanted to become a therapist or psych nurse practitioner to help kids like him.

November 30, 2022

Passed away of an unintended fentanyl overdose. 

Valentino is survived by his mother, Melissa Shimmin, his step father, Ron Usher, his grandparents, Mimi Shimmin and Butch Durst, his aunts and uncles, Nadine Shimmin and Mario Martin, and Reed and Natasha Durst, as well as cousins Christopher Martin Shimmin, Clara Martin Shimmin, Bella Durst and Beckler Durst. He will be especially missed by his girlfriend, Anna Stubstad.
