Ursula's obituary
In Loving Memory
Ursula Greta Hindel, born October 18, 1928, in Berlin, Germany, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2023, in Silver Spring, MD.
Ursula was the first-born daughter of Otto Elias, a language professor and Berta Orth, a family physician. Her sister Irmgard was born 4 years later.
The family lived in Berlin but emigrated to the United States in 1938 to build a new life together in America.
The family settled first in New York. Ursula attended Smith and then Radcliffe earning a master's degree in clinical psychology. She had started her PhD, after Harvard opened its doctorate programs to Radcliff, when she met Robert Hindel, a dashing young Viennese man who was also attending Harvard. Robert moved on to MIT where he received his PhD in electrical engineering. They married in July 1951. The couple wanted to begin a family and deciding that a full-time mother would be the most important for children Ursula discontinued her PhD studies.
Over the next twelve years, Ursula and Robert had six children: all of whom survive Ursula.
In 1968 the family returned to Germany where Robert took a management position with Picker International Corp. During the five years that followed, Ursula would organize many trips throughout Germany and Austria providing a wonderful learning experience for the children.
In 1973, the family moved to Cleveland, OH, and Ursula began a career as a German-English translator and occasional interpreter. After all the children left home, the couple moved to Orange, CT. Ursula obtained a paralegal certificate and joined the New Haven firm of Mirto, Ketainek, and Barrett. She served as a paralegal for the next 30 years until she retired in 2020 at the age of 91.
In October 2020, Ursula relocated to Riderwood, a Senior Living Community, in Silver Spring, MD, to be closer to her daughter Lore and son Martin. She greatly enjoyed her home there, especially the many birds, squirrels and deer who came regularly to her feeders.
Ursula is forever loved and treasured by her family. She is predeceased by her parents, Otto Elias and Berta Orth, and her husband, Robert Hindel. She is survived by her sister Irmgard Gesund, her children Lore M. Sanchez, Robert E. Hindel (life-long friend Emilia), Joanne E. Hindel, Peter P. Hindel (Linda Beth Hindel), Ingeborg Hindel and Martin J. Hindel; her grandchildren Alissa M.
