Ty's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tyrrel Eugene Reay (Ty Reay), who left us on February 6, 2026, at the age of 65.

Born on July 19, 1960, in New London, Connecticut, Ty was a beacon of light in the lives of those who knew him. He was raised in North Stonington, where his time by the ocean started his love for nature and the outdoors, a passion that would follow him throughout his life.

Tyrrel's life was filled with vibrant experiences and cherished relationships.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Stella (Souza) Reay, his father, Tyrrel V. Reay, and his son, Justin Reay.

His absence is deeply felt by his surviving children, Joshua Reay, Jeremiah Reay, Tiara Reay, and Jeannie Spencer, along with his five cherished grandchildren. Ty also leaves behind a myriad of friends who were like family.

A man of many interests, Ty was an avid photographer, a lover of nature, and a passionate car enthusiast. He found joy in exploring the night sky through his telescope and relished the natural beauty of hiking various landscapes everywhere he went. His adventurous spirit led him to travel, creating memories and bonding friendships that would last a lifetime.

Ty was well-known for his outspoken nature; when he set his mind to something, he pursued it with fervor. His passion for life and the causes he believed in inspired those around him to live authentically and boldly.

In addition to his personal pursuits, Ty dedicated many years of his life volunteering at the Mystic Aquarium, where he shared his love for marine life with others.

In honor of his memory, donations can be made to the Mystic Aquarium, where he spent countless hours volunteering, releasing rehabilitated seals and swimming with the beluga whales, a cause close to his heart.

Ty's daughters would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Chaplain Cliff Donley—out of the Penrose Hospital in Colorado where Tyrrel passed away—for the unwavering support and guidance on getting their father home.

Though Ty has departed from this world, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His laughter, wisdom, and zest for life will be missed but not forgotten. As we celebrate his life, let us carry forward his legacy of passion, friendship, and love for nature.

A celebration of life will be held in honor of Ty for family and friends, details to be given to those who cared for him in the coming days.

Rest in peace, Tyrrel Eugene Reay.
