Tonya was a VIP and an icon in my little world. We grew up together and our parents were close. We first met in elementary school and later we attended the same Jewish private school (to avoid busing--those were the early '70s). In fifth grade we sat next to each other, and the night of my bar mitzvah banquet we sat next to each other again. After the early 1980s we lost touch for a staggering 25 years until out of the blue Tonya came to my father's burial service. From then on we stayed in touch regularly, on Facebook but often in person. The best memory I have of her is the night she, together with her son Alex, attended a reading I gave at the Green Apple bookstore on Clement. Afterwards we had an exquisite Russian meal in a restaurant down the street. It was magical, with the fog rolling in, and the hills and the drab but historic houses of the Avenues.  It was my first time back in the city after losing my father, and that evening something was healed in me.  We talked about the past and our parents. I always imagined that we would have the rest of the future to still be friends and to still be reminiscing about our childhood in the Sunset District. I don't think it's fair that she was taken away so early.  Besides one cousin, Tonya was my last connection to San Francisco. This is a loss like no other. I pray for my own healing from this loss, but, more than that, for healing to come to her loved ones: Rick, Alex, Eli, and Jenna.

I can’t adequately express how sad I was to hear of Tonya’s passing. We shared deep family ties and intimate stories for more than 20 years, and a deep love for our conjoined families. Though we weren’t in touch often after we moved away, we had just shared photos and exchanged family news. I’ll miss her adventurousness, sense of humor, good sense and openness.
