Tomasa's obituary

Tomasa Guerra Chapa, 86, died peacefully Friday, Sept. 8, 2023 at her Bakersfield home with her family and close friends by her side. Tomasa was born September 22, 1936, in Pharr, Texas. She married the love of her life, Ovidio “Johnny” Chapa, on May 7, 1960, in Caldwell, Idaho. They were each other’s lifelong companions for more than 60 years and were blessed with five children: Tina, Jose, Esmeralda, Yolanda, and Irma, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Maria, Juanita, Paula, Angie and two brothers, Elias and Joe.

She was a loved member of the Jehovah’s Witness community in Bakersfield and loved music, dancing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her 86 years of life she became a strong fierce woman who worked hard to improve and advance the life of her family. She instilled hard work and determination in each and every one of her family and friends to do better in life and be the best they could be. She lived through many societal changes from the great depression to a global pandemic and through it all she never wavered, always keeping her faith in Jehovah and love for her family a priority.

Her experience provided a guide for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to persevere and find success in their lives through education, careers, and a determination to give back to their communities. Through her faith, Tomasa gave strength and courage to countless young people to do good for society and she was loved by them in return. The relationships she built over the span of her life will never be forgotten, from the tiniest of moments to larger life events, her love will be remembered and felt always. Tomasa will be dearly missed, but will continue to inspire her family and others to live their best lives serving their communities.
