Tom's obituary

Tom Roger Garrett went home to be with Jesus on May 28, 2023 in Kyenjojo, Uganda, Africa where his body is buried. Tom was born in 1956 near Abilene, Texas to Roger Q. and Ruth Garrett. There he spent his childhood years and graduated from Cooper High School in 1975. In 1979 he graduated from Asbury University in Kentucky where met and married his wife, Laura Miller Garrett from Terre Haute, Indiana. Throughout the years Tom and Laura lived in Kentucky, Abilene, Texas, Lubbock, Texas, Amarillo, Texas, the Kokomo, Indiana area, Granbury, Texas, and Western Uganda where they served their final years as missionaries. During those years they worked alongside pastors in Grace Calvary Church, Amarillo, Crossroads Community Church in Kokomo, Cleburne Bible Church, Stonewater Church, Granbury, and helped start Pulpit Church in Uganda.

Tom’s life has been marked by his love for marginalized children evidenced by his work as a youth pastor, his service at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, pioneering a home for abused, abandoned and neglected children in Sangralea Valley, Indiana, volunteering as foster parent, and extensive work with children and families in Western Uganda.

Tom’s passion in life was to be used by God in the process of building men towards Christlike maturity, who would in turn build other men towards Christlike maturity. Two continents are dotted today with many men who are building others towards Christlikeness due in part to Tom’s influence in their lives. He loved Jesus, loved people and loved getting the two together. He fought the good fight and finished the race. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Tom is survived by his American family, Laura, wife of 44 years, a son, Jeremiah (Katie) Garrett of Wilmore, KY, a daughter, April (Zach) Bennett of Malabar, Florida, a daughter, Tizzie Timberlake, of Colorado Springs, CO, and 11 grandchildren: Joshua, Aletheia, Seraiah and Caius Daniel Garrett, Parker, Carson and Hunter Bennett, Aiden Paramore, and DaQuann, DeSean and Darius Barron. He is also survived by his sister, Jane (Mike) Carter, his brother, Jim Garrett, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tom is also survived by his African Family, sons Monday, Clovis, Alan, Isaac and Mark, daughters Rita, Brenda, Daisy and Ann, and several friends who affectionately called him Papa.

In lieu of flowers, to keep his vision and legacy alive for years to come, please make donations to: Outreach International, Project GM 5601, PO Box 272, Shelbyville, MO. (GM is Garrett Ministry. This will continue the funding for the many people and projects in Kyenjojo, Uganda.) Tom’s “graduation party” will be held at StoneWater Church, 911 E Hwy 377, Box 4, Granbury, Texas at a later date this summer. Please come as you are to celebrate his life.

“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”

2 Timothy 2:2
